....Do most people pronounce "Deal" with just one syllable, then?? I can't work out how that would sound right!

OK, I have to own up to being the regular Thursday columnist on http://donduk.blogspot.com and can assure you that the typical Coventry accent makes "deal" last one syllable.

Brum does the same, but Black Country turns it into "day-ull" in the same way that "road" becomes "row-wud" and "sound" becomes "sow-wund". In parts of the Black Country, even "rain" becomes "ray-yun". Diphthongs are combinations of two vowel sounds, like OU, AI and OA. That's how we non-Midlanders first get to tell the difference between Brum and Yamyam: the Brum accent pronounces diphthongs as one gliding sound; Yamyam doesn't and turns them into two separate sounds.

Phonetics lesson over. ;)

And yes, the blog is all written affectionately and with tongue firmly in cheek. When I find I really don't like a contestant, you'll somehow be able to tell...

I love the Brummie accent. Don't really have a strong one myself but it is adorable.

Mark is possibly the best of the current bunch of contestants since he seems to be giving the most advice. I really hope Joseph comes back as he was the only one who was offering a level of advice similar to what Mark is giving just now.

But Marks advice really sucks. It'll be because of him we'll never have a £250,000 winner.
