Brian 28/03 on his recent £29,000 win on the show.

SELF-confessed "gobby" pensioner Brian Hyde talked himself into a very good deal when he walked away from a TV gameshow with a £29,000 prize.

Retired milkman Brian of Burman Road, Wath cashed his winnings wisely on Noel Edmonds' Channel Four show Deal Or No Deal, which was screened last week.

Said Brian, 69: "I loved every minute of it. It was a fantastic experience."

The chatty granddad became a hit with viewers and made lots of friends during the 10 days his appearances were filmed.

"It was Noel who talked me into accepting the money. He was sat in the audience talking to my wife Shirley, while I was having a 'sweep' with the audience."

In Deal Or No Deal, contestants choose or reject sealed boxes with the ultimate aim of winning the top prize of £250,000.

"When I won it was a bad week for the other contestants - they didn't understand what the game was all about," said Brian.

"They only had eyes for the big £250,000 prize. Some were given decent offers and were turning them down. I have been backing horses since I was a teenager so I knew what the score is. I turned down up to £22,000 and then after that I took £75,000 out. I felt like I had fallen into a trap but for some reason the next offer went up by £7,000 to £29,000.

"Noel looked me in the eye, whispered to me and said: 'Think about it, Brian'. We have worked all our lives and never had this kind of money.

"I had a sweep with the audience and asked them to stand upif they would take the money. All 150 of them did. I think Shirley was the first one to stand up!"

Brian admitted he had never heard of the series when wife Shirley entered him for it.

"When Shirley saw the first series were looking for contestants she entered me. She said they were looking for gobby people and I fitted the bill!"

What will he do with the cash? "We have already treated our grandchildren and two sons. The rest of the money is going into an account for holidays. We are going to Scotland next week and we are going on a trip to Paris later on in the year.

The couple have already visited contestants they became firm friends with on the show, including a champagne reception at a Blackpool nightclub.

Said Brian: "We had a fantastic time and met a lot of great new friends. The only downside was that, unlike us, most of them left with very little to show for it."

"It was Noel who talked me into accepting the money. He was sat in the audience talking to my wife Shirley, while I was having a 'sweep' with the audience."

Now that quote is most probably taken out of context but it will no doubt annoy some people who feel Noel should remain neutral either way.

I don't really give a toss with Noel being neutral or not. Chris Tarrant is the same on Millionaire, he strictly tells to some contestants not to lose the money but he tends to twists some contestants arms to play the question.

Anyway, the interesting point in the above article was the following statement.

Quote:
"When I won it was a bad week for the other contestants - they didn't understand what the game was all about," said Brian.

"They only had eyes for the big £250,000 prize. Some were given decent offers and were turning them down. I have been backing horses since I was a teenager so I knew what the score is. So is he saying the contestants on the wings in the last two/three weeks were all £250,000 glory hunters?

This artcile's interesting... it's as if Brian's actually criticising the contestants who were around at his time and left with little money. :?
