Quite reassuring you don't know stats like those off the top of your head, that would be quite disturbing!

Anyway, as my mind wouldn't rest until such an important and essential piece of information was uncovered, I have been up half the night trying to work that one out (god knows why). I do have the answers for 2nd, 3rd and 4th places:

348 - Paul (Jan 3 '07)
580 - Tina (Oct 30 '07)
928 - Kate (Jan 7 '09)

Two of those had the added end game distractions of hypothetical swaps and mystery offers, which didn't help. Night night!

That occurance happening 5 times is above the statisical expectation. The chances of picking any box first have another box on the table (assuming that all the box amounts are different) is 1 in 462, so we'd expect it to happen approximately twice in 1000 shows.

I'm in the camp where Gaz's presence wouldn't have had any effect on me today. I assume had the £100k not been in her box then we wouldn't have seen most of the comments from Noel.

Indeed, although the 95% confidence interval of a Poisson Distribution with parameter lambda = 1000/462 would be the interval [0, 5], so seeing five occurrences isn't statistically significant at the 5% level.

Obviously.

I'm only just a bit edgy since were getting close to show 1000, it's nothing to do with my expectations which have been thrown out of the window since £75k Keran's game

What if after waiting for so long, the 1,000th show turns out to be a massive let-down? :|

That depends on the player who plays the 1,000th and it is a random game after all. ;)

Just skipped through this one on Catchup. Very, very interesting dissonance between 'compassionate Noel' and 'Wakey Noel' at the end... he goes through most of the catchphrases ('regret', 'never have that chance again'... though not 'squander' this time) in seemingly an empty, hollow manner, while strongly emphasising to a somewhat upset player (though nowhere near as upset as he seemed to make out, unless my admittedly-poor reading of body language is off-beam again - she looks more shocked than upset).

Without question, the real Noel is not the one we criticised two years ago, and the phrases of that era are coming out because they are expected of him. He needs some courage of his own to defy those expectations.

You may recall yesterday I posed this teaser:

StatsMan wrote:
...What I want to know is: who was the first player ever to take a swap in a game, what did they swap away and what did they receive in terms of box amounts, and what date did they play on?

For a bonus point, can you tell me the best swap and worst swap there has been, in terms of the difference between the box amounts (absolute value). Players and amounts involved.

This proved absolutely no problem for seasoned DOND statistician Mister Al, who will have given anyone who bothered to play along a massive hint:

MisterAl wrote:
Sadly, I know the answers to all of those apart from the amount that was swapped away, without even looking it up. But I won't spoil everybody's fun by revealing the answer. Instead I'll just say that the second ever swap took place on 3 January 2006, when Nick swapped away £100 to become the first ever 1p winner. (All answered without looking anything up. My brain really shouldn't decide to remember this stuff...)

The correct answer, as he well knew, was Irene, who played on 2nd January 2006, but he was beaten on the fact she swapped away £250 and received just £5, although that's hardly surprising.

Big Davey corrected identified the best swaps and worst swaps:

Big-Davey wrote:
I'm quite confident the worst swap was Orry, who swapped away the £100,000 to win £1 (without the turkey bonus of £1,000 of course).

And the best swap was with Psychic Sarah; who swapped her original box (which had 10p) for the £250,000!

...although these are pretty memorable games, so that's not actually that difficult, really.

Today's teaser coming later.

Now, today's teaser is all about milestones. As we are all aware, DOND is fast approaching its 1000th show, but can you match up the following player names to the milestone games (e.g. 100th, 200th, 300th... up to 900th)? (I think this is quite tricky...)

Tina
Ron
Rose
Lisa
Sarah
Helen
Anna
Annie
Caron

As usual, no peeking! Answer tomorrow night.

I think this is one of the few "teasers" of yours that I can actually answer, to be honest, but even then I can only get a few. :laughing

Tina
Ron - 200
Rose - 400
Lisa
Sarah
Helen - 300
Anna - 100
Annie - 500
Caron - 700

I wouldn't have got that many if you'd asked me to match the names to the show numbers though...

Really!! Too many stats so little time-or patience. Is it a male thing or do female members go into the stats so much? Please do correct me! I always skip over the stat rundowns. Never a fan of stats even tho i have a psychology degree! For which reason i'm curious on the difference between male and female interest in stats. Me? Female, and little concern. No offence to anyone who is lol

I suspect there's a gender difference, but wouldn't care to predict the scale of it!

Yes, she had the £100,000 in her box, and yes, Gaz was there but that my friends, is a thing called a conicidence.

I have no problems with her dealing when she did, I thought it was a good offer for the board and would have gone then myself.

It was quite weird though, how the two £35,000's went in two consecutive boxes though..
