I think the comments on here by some are a little harsh on Mary. It's easy to be an outsider looking in..but when you are up there, your game and the way you play it is determined by such a myriad of variables that you just have to do what you think is best for you in your circumstances. And that's what Mary did, she is a beautiful lady and made life on the West Wing a daily joy. If I had been a watcher on my game I would have normally said a definite no deal at two box with the £20k backing up the £75k but It was such a momentus experience going from £10k to £47.5k. I knew what that £47.5k would do for me and my fmaily, I'd be though the ringer getting there (also was thinking that I would struggle to know what to do if the swap was offered).
Hindsight is a wonderful thing once the box is revealed. All any of us can do is what we think is right at the given moment and that is influenced by a lot more than statistical probability of possible outcomes.
I've often noticed when watching that I have 2 trains of thoughts - the right decision for the board and the right decision for the player and sometimes they go in 2 different directions. It became more apparant when I was in the audience and the contestant isn't just a picture on a screen but someone 10 metres away from you.
