Wreckage of the plane is apparently on the pavement, with a fire raging at the top of the building! :? :(

Sounds like a terrible accident...

Plane Crash In Manhattan
Updated: 20:16, Wednesday October 11, 2006

At least one person has died after an aircraft crashed into the side of an apartment building on the New York island of Manhattan.

The building is on fire and people are believed to be trapped by the "very heavy smoke".

There is confusion as to whether it was a plane or helicopter that crashed into the building on the Upper East Side, on East 72nd Street and York Avenue.

Authorities have said the crash is unlikely to be a result of terrorism.

At least one apartment on the 19th floor and two or three apartments on the 20th floor are ablaze.

The building is 50 storeys high and the smoke from the fire can be seen from seven miles around.

One witness said: "It's really bad."

Another witness told Fox News the scene was "pandemonium".

He said: "There was a lot of horror and terror on the street when it happened. It was a loud explosion and I couldn't tell if it was the sound of a bomb... then i saw the black smoke and people were running and screaming."

More follows...

I really REALLY hope this is not terrorism, and it's a bit of a scare that it's on the 11th definitely.

Additional:

Why do people want to attack my country in such a vicious way? If you don't like the place, fine, you have the right to an opinion. But when that hatred makes you want to MURDER INNOCENT PEOPLE, that is just crossing the line. :x :x :x

You're right.... obviously the mood was the same here surrounding July 7th and I'm sure around the world for other terrorist attacks...

But let's hope this isn't another one.
