At the moment MPs are elected by First-Past-The-Post system, where the candidate getting the most votes in a constituency is elected.

On the 5th May 2011 all registered UK voters will be able to vote 'Yes' or 'No' on whether to change the way MPs are elected to the Alternative Vote system.

Under the Alternative Vote system, voters rank candidates in their constituency in order of preference. Anyone getting more than 50% of first-preference votes is elected. If no-one gets 50% of votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and their backers' second choices allocated to those remaining. This process continues until one candidate has at least 50% of all votes in that round.

So the question is, which are you in favour of? First-Past-The-Post or Alternative Vote, and why?

I couldn't really decide to begin with, but in the end I went for "yes", as I think the changes it would bring about should be good. I also think the current FPTP system is not very good - whether AV is the answer or not remains to be seen!

I must also admit that I was probably slightly swayed by the Labour supporters and senior figures (e.g. Ed Miliband, Gordon Brown) who were in favour of AV too.

Can't decide - both systems have their pros and cons.

And a hung parliament is still possible with AV...

For me personally, I've already decided to cut myself off from politics altogether - before I'm persuaded to go one way or t'other, by people who know exactly what they're doing...which isn't all what "we" might think.
To vote is to say "Govern my life"...and no one person, as a human, is in any more "power" than another - therefore the entire campaign here is a waste of money, time and effort. The outcome of any "referendum" or "vote" will be the same as before.

I'll declare I have no interest at all - and it's not because politics is boring...more that I possess sense.

Oh, and strange they can hold a "referendum" on how to vote them back in...but they can't on this whole EU affair...isn't it?

Ha! I suppose, in our modern "fair" society - 1 for yes, 1 for no, 2 for undecided and 2 who don't care, oh yes - that's a resounding unanimity. Unanimousity. Unanimosity. God only knows what the right word is, I mean to say it's unanimous :-D
