Back when the Sioux and the Apache were great nations, there were three braves named Running Bear, Moon Dog and Jumping Wolf, and each of their women was due to give birth. Before the event, the Medicine Man did all the things that all good Medicine Men do, and moved all three women into a large tent, then declared that the braves must each go out and bring back an animal skin for his woman to lie on during delivery.
This was agreed by the braves and by the chief of the tribe and in due course Running Bear came back, slightly wounded, with a buffalo skin, and his woman lay upon it. Moon Dog returned a few days later with the skin of a mountain bear. He was covered in his own blood and was limping badly. His woman was laid upon the bear skin and he hobbled back to his own tent.
After two weeks Jumping Wolf had not returned, and there were fears that he would not be back in time, if at all. However, on the very day of the birth, he staggered into the tent dragging a skin that none of the tribe had ever seen before. He then related how he had journeyed far away to a land across the sea. There he had seen a mysterious beast and an inner voice had told him that this was the one he must kill.
He then collapsed into unconsciousness and was carried to his own tent, while his woman was laid upon the skin. The births were all successful. Running Bear's woman had a beautiful female child. Moon Dog's woman had a strong and fearless male child. Jumping Wolf's woman had two children, one male and one female.
When Jumping Wolf had sufficiently recovered from his ordeal the Medicine Man asked him to relate anything he knew about the strange animal that he had killed and skinned, other than it's great size and ferocity. Jumping Wolf told him he had heard that it was called a hippopotamus.
"It fits!" the Medicine Man announced as if he were declaring some great important discovery.
"What fits?" Jumping Wolf asked, very puzzled by this outburst.
"Ancient prophecy," the Medicine Man answered "That the squaw on the hippopotamus is equal to the sum of the squaws on the other two hides."
