Easy one...

There is a word which can be pronounced two ways.

The two pronounciations are opposites.

What is the word?

Hmmm. This is like watching 'Countdown'. But I'll give it my best attempt.

(Incidentally, and for the record, I did get a nine letter word that even the experts didn't pick up on... RIGMAROLE. But that was back in 1998). 8)

Ok then, Skyline's quandary...

Erm, any chance of a clue??

Phil.

Is it 'read'? As 'reed' it means doing reading, and as 'red' it means having done it?

A young peasant wanted to marry the king's daughter. The king didn't like the idea of his daughter marrying a peasant, but he wanted to appear fair in front of his subjects. The king said that he would put two pieces of paper into a hat, one reading EXILE and the other reading MARRIAGE. Later that day, the peasant overheard the king saying that both pieces of paper would read EXILE, thus ensuring that the peasant would be out of his way for good. The peasant remained undaunted and, as arranged, arrived at the king's court where a large crowd gathered for the big event. The peasant then did something that assured him the hand of the king's daughter. What did he do?

Probably something like asking the king to pick one piece of paper out the hat first and then the peasant would abide by whatever was left in the hat.

Close enough I suppose.

The peasant picked one of the pieces of paper and tore it up. He then asked the king to show him the other piece of paper which, of course, said EXILE. The king, not wishing to appear fraudulent in front of his subjects, granted that the piece of paper the peasant had picked must have said MARRIAGE.

What common English verb becomes its own past tense by rearranging its letters?

Correct!

I am a window, I am a lamp, I am clouded, I am shining, and I am coloured; set in white, I fill with water and overflow. I say much, but I have no words. What am I?

It's the "I fill with water and overflow" and the "I say much, but I have no words" bits which are baffling me.

I was going to suggest a diamond (or ruby or something) but they don't fill with water or make noise. I assume when it says "I say much", it means that the object in question makes a noise? :?
