7:59pm, January 9th 2012: ITV had dropped dead, had The X Factor been dropped. Saturday nights had long episodes of WWTBAM and other new series that were boring. BBC was slightly the same. Everyone was big on the 2012 Olympics. Down in London, an old television series was being resurrected.

The host can be heard somewhere. “One million pounds at stake, 24 eager contestants and just one question.” Dermot O’Leary walks on stage. “Deal or No Deal?”
Some very graphical rolling titles appear which includes a box falling. After a few seconds, amounts can be seen, such as £40,000 £300 and the box bounces off the amounts. A few seconds later, the box drops onto a glass table, and it opens to reveal “Deal or No Deal” written inside. The box has a black “?” on the front of it.

“Welcome to this show of Deal or No Deal. Back again. But we’re not playing for £250,000 like Noel did. Not playing for £500,000 like Patrick did. We’re playing for £1,000,000!” Audience applause, and a couple of women contestants can we seen smiling too. “Every host has brought a different game board to the show. This is ours.”




“We also have 24 contestants. We split them into Blue wing and Red wing. We have the guys in the blue; the girls in red. They have their white boxes in front of them containing the board amounts. In game play, the amounts taken off the board are out of play and are known they are not in the contestant’s box. Let’s choose Deal or No Deal’s first contestant.”

Just a quick one Aaron - don't you think it'd be better if you had the £250,000 instead of £200,000?

"Our first contestant is...SANDRA!"


Sandra is 34, from Nottingham. She is Married to Harry and as no children. She thinks she may be planning to have a child sometime in the future. Sandra enjoys her trips out and walking by rivers. Sandra says she would like to get money on an around the world trip.

"So I guess you're into travelling then?" Asks Dermot.
Sandra smiles. "Yes. I go on a walk every day by the nearest river. It's a hoppy, and I have done so since I was just 4."
"Fantastic. What would it mean if you get enough money for an around the world trip?"
"It would mean quite a lot. It's an ambition, so I would be very happy."
"Well good luck, hope you get what yoo want. Just need to ask you that you chose that box 1 randomly before the show began."
"Indeed."
Dermot then goes onto how the boxes are selected at random and explains the independent adjudicator. "Sandra. Your aim is to knock out the blues and the lower reds and keep the bigger amounts in play. In the first round, you have to open 5 boxes."
The audience, and the wings applause, as Sandra starts walking around for numbers. the board appears on the TV set at home.
"I think I'll start with Nathaniel, Box 3."
Nathaniel smiles and opens the box...

Box 3: £50

Applauses. "Thank you!" "That's £50 that's not in your box. Good choice! Try and avoid the high amounts, and we could be on a roll already." Sandra looks around again. "I'll go for Komachi and Box 10"
Komachi speaks, and she has a Japanese accent when she says "Good luck."

Box 10: £100,000

Groans. Sandra doesn't look too upset about it. "Ah well, that's life really. I still have some big amounts left there. Let's try 24 with you Logan."
Logan is Scottish, and has a very strong accent. He reaches for the seal...

Box 24: £75

Sandra gives a small "Yes..." and Dermot is stood near the board. "3 more, and don't touch the top 3." "Gene! Box 7." "Good luck me darlin!"

Box 7 - £500

Applauses. Sandra rushes to Gene. Dermot starts walking toward Sandra. "Almost text-book start. Next one." "My Greek friend Aeneus, Box 12!" Aeneus opens the box right away...

Box 12: £1,000

Sandra is very happy. "I can't believe it!" Dermot looks shocked too. "It was just the £100,000 that spoiled that round. But with the top 3 there, I wonder what the offer will be?"

The Banker says he is annoyed. 'My piles are staying with me, thank you.'

The opening offer is one million pennies - £10,000

"That could be a guaranteed £10,000 now. Is that what you want?" "Nope." "Sandra, the question is Deal or No Deal?" "NO DEAL."

Applauses, Sandra hit's the "No Deal" button on the table, and walks over to the red wing. "19 please." "Good luck Sandra!"

Box 19: £200

"Un...be...lievable." Dermot is gobsmacked, and Sandra is rapid to pick another box. "2 more Sandra." "It's 23 Ivan." Ivan doesn't look too old, but sounds old. He opens the box.

Box 23 - £10,000

Sandra Nods. "That's absolutely fine." "Sandra, we can afford to hit say, £20,000 with this next pick, so It can be red, but not too big." "4." Valerie opens her box.
