A wonderful human being plays a clever game and walks away with a nice chunk of cash in her back pocket (or transferred to her bank ac---look, that's not the point, alright?

) - what's not to love?
I love the way that in this version of the show, we actually get to know the contestants from the moment they arrive, and really will them to have a good game when their turn comes. It's something that was completely absent from the original show at the corresponding stage of its life - a newbie would be introduced when called upon to open their box, and that introduction comprised Noel saying, 'hello, you're new, open the box'. As time went by, a contestant might be called upon for advice, or earn themselves an occasional mention for some novel thing or another that they'd said or done...but that would be it, until their day arrived, and for a great many players, even throughout their own games, very little about their personalities or their lives was ever shared with the viewer.
This time it's the polar opposite: Stephen welcomes the newbie, or newbies in this case, we learn something about them, we see them in action, hear them talk, and they get to face the inevitable stage nerves and conquer them with a warm, appreciative, supportive round of applause from everyone in the studio.
No uncomfortable first box openings here! I mean...there have been a few, but...that's just a matter of technique!
As the shows go by, we come to have an idea of what it is generally that makes a person who they are, and when their show arrives, we think, 'oh! It's so-and-so, I'm looking forward to this!' - when they hit the £100,000 we suffer a bit with them (or dance with them), when they do well we rejoice in it for them, and, come triumph or disaster, that person has our support.
This is something that I think was absent from the original show. It was a game show - it was a statistician's plaything, an anorak's dream, the wings were populated by seasoned quizzers and professional game show players; to many of them, it wouldn't have mattered had they left with ten thousand, or a tenner.
This time it's different, and today was a perfect example of why it's different and just how magnificent it is that it's different, and that is why, believe it or not, in my view, this show isn't just set apart from the original. It's better.
Miles, miles better.
I hope you enjoy the money, Wendy. There's one very proud man up there in heaven, just now.
