Just as Noel is about to open the box the Banker calls and offers Mary the SWAP.

Banker's offer:

SWAP

Mary says she was always going to take a swap for box 22, but a few ask her if she is sure and then some doubt enters her mind.

Mary says

NO SWAP

Box 22 with Lisa contains the £10

That was a tough way to earn £10,000 says Noel, and he also declares it a Banker Spanking :D

Well deserved I'd say. Derisory offers throughout. As if anyone would deal £1400?!

Agreed. The only one worth considering was the swap! Good on Mary for taking every bad box on the chin - another player could have been really visibly crushed by hitting a significant amount in every round like she did - and for treating the offers with the contempt they were due.

As for when the £10k was revealed... I'm still laughing at that shot of Robbie jumping on Marley. :laughing

Going to do a one-post recap on the commentary again.

Oh crumbs, it's an old lady called Mary. I think we can all remember another contestant fitting that description. At least Noel has changed tack for today's introduction, emphasising the 'every game is different' angle, which was the correct response to yesterday's curious events. No banging on about the proveout.

Oh more confusion for an elderly Mary. And irony of ironies, the first two she takes out are £75k and £50k. Crumbs, that really is a terrible opening round! Obligatory throwaway opening gambit, a dramatically better second round, and it's difficult to judge offers here, but three grand seems consistent with what one may expect.

Boom.

Mary's husband implied targetist behaviour there, or at least that's the logical conclusion to deciding that there would be little point in Dealing with £100k off the board. The Banker will probably leave her absolutely no choice in the matter now. £800 at 11-box, there we go.

And it gets worse. Including the offer. At least the 1p goes last, which should lead to a much more sensible offer. Only in comparison; two grand when the mean is six? I'd understand it if you scaled everything up an order of magnitude, although I'd still play on with such a scenario, but Mary's never going to take that at these stakes.

Sure enough, she knocks out the top prize and still should receive a better offer. Oh. How much more interesting would that have been with an offer of £3,000?

Ten grand in the box, so it is a rather nice recovery game, but she had absolutely no decisions to get there, and it would be pretty desperate stuff to chalk that one up as 'a victory for courage', or whatever nonsensical phraseology Noel might throw out. There we go, "a tough way to earn £10,000". Hahabonk.

Well there was only 2 ways the production team were going to go today at 2-box (assuming that Mary was every going to consider dealing, which in a game with such a low-peak offer was a big assumption), either offer a sensible £3k-£4k or offer something so low that the player would have to go on. Luckily, we got the £10k in the box which produced the feelgood ending that was obviously wanted by the DOND team today.

Having said that, I'm fairly confident Mary would have probably turned down a decent offer at 2-box today anyway - just thankful she refused the SWAP.

You may call it luck Simon, I (and perhaps others?) have other ideas. Noel almost had a heart attack when there was a possibility that she might actually swap.

You'll never convince me that DOND is anything but 100% fair but as KP says, shows like today don't exactly help the fact that sometimes DOND doesn't seem to the casual viewer to be 100% totally fair.

To be fair Noel is never fully comfortable with the swap, He often says he hates to think he might be carrying the big money away from the table. I don't believe though that anyone other than the IA knows where the money is.

That was a pretty good game as it turned out - though Mary's inability to count to three did grate on me - some very unlucky box openings, derisory offers and the most satisfying of outcomes. When you consider the peak offer was £3,000 to go away with £10k is a fantastic result
