They just don't get any better than that!

PS I think my first suit was a 30 bob one from Burton's and if I can remember them then so can Noel (we're the same age) Image

Let's face it when the three highest amounts went in one round we all expected a blue finish :smt009

Well done Joe for a wonderful feel good game and a great result :D

It also answers my question that I could not remember Joe being in the Dream Factory when I was there for next Monday's and Tuesday's shows :D

Yes :D ! What a great game with a very well-deserved result :D . Joe was a great character, and I must admit, he doesn't look his age at all!

Anyway, congrats to DoND's most senior player to date, and I hope the money benefits the Chelsea hospital.

Was a very entertaining and interesting game today. Was so nice to see such a lovely character taking the game with a "lighter heart" than others.

That show was perfect for avoiding an anticlimax after the 1,000th show,
and would've worked if it had been Show 1,000.

Loved the stories of Joe's life, and to be as sharp and quick-witted at 97 is amazing!

At that age you should be allowed the fun of playing the game to the end regardless.
I did think £4,097 was a very generous offer at 8 box, it showed the banker's respect for Joe.

It must be unique to get both the 1 in 363 chance of hitting the three highest reds in round 3,
followed by the 1 in 28 chance of leaving the two highest amounts to the end from 8 box!

A classic show, and fully deserved win!
After only two shows this month so far, there will be a good contest for show of the month! :D

Sounds more likely to me.
These people have to learn that once you're past the age of 55 you aren't rendered entirely useless. Alright, mostly useless, but not entirely. Although that is a joke I can't make as I'm not over 55 and therefore it will be seen as a "horrible inflammatory comment".

Just read the commentary for the last bit of the show, I happened to be watching as Joe seemed to be quite a character. That big grin came straight onto my face when the last blue went, and if anyone he deserves the £20k. Again, welldone.

The Banker actually (correctly) said that the odds were 363/1, which actually means it's a 1 in 364 chance. I am overly pedantic.

And it's actually the first time we've seen that happen ever, let alone subsequently going on to leave the highest two alone from 8-box.

Might I suggest that the reason so many people have this blind spot is because so many over the age of 55 are still carrying on as before and they just don't realise how old they are. Joe has 37 years on me and I'm not ready to be thrown on the scrap heap yet. I bet I do more in a day than many a fraction of my age. The body creaks a bit but I'm not fat, unlike so many younger people today and my mind is as sharp as ever.

22 boxes, a quarter of a million pounds and no questions except one; what would Joe have done with Lisa's board?

A blind chaser of the money he may have been, but I don't think even I can complain about the fact that the chase worked. Wonder if he was equally successful in chasing any of the young girls on the wings :D

And if you're playing for a large charity then there's almost a rationale in that sort of play - the main reason for taking below-mean offers is that the utility of the offer exceeds the utility of the board, but seeing as the hospital are seeking to raise £35,000,000, the utility function for them is going to be basicaly flat in dealing with sums of twenty grand or less isn't it?

I certainly wasn’t expecting Joe today. Thankfully though the gambles Joe took eventually paid off and managed to get the best result out of the game. I was worried that it was going to become a train-wreck. Thankfully an all blue round, just when it was needed, ensured that we’d get a good end result regardless of whether it was £15k or £20k in the box.

I thought i'd have a look and see and compare the boards.

This is the board from today's game.

This is the board from Alice's game and how it usually looks for all the games.

If you compare the top image to the recent gold board it seems like they used the same "swooshy" effect on today's board, but in a silver colour. Whereas the normal board is less "swoosy". Perhaps they forgot to turn the effect off they used for the gold board?

There's also this rather rare bluey coloured board, but who's game did it appear in?

I'd have thought if you were playing for that purpose you'd probably feel worse about gambling and going away with next to nothing than if you were playing for yourself?

Anyway, great show to follow up the 1000th show week, I knew it was Joe today and I suppose they didn't want to take any chances by keeping him on too long and risking him having to leave without getting his game even though he seemed in great condition for 97! It was clear he was going to the end once the big money went, it felt like one of those "good" blue win shows (Dirk, Walter etc) all the way but then had a great twist at the end when he turned it round and left £15k and £20k! Would he have been as Wakeyistic on a powerful board I wonder?

You're right about the perceptions - see also any number of celebrity contestants on Millionaire - but what I was implying is that £20,000 really would be five times as useful to a large charity as £4,000, thus making near-mean offers rejectable on a board like Joe's!

If it had been anyone else but Joe today, I'd be posting about how that was an undeserved and lucky £20k box win by turning down 2 virtual mean offers on a very unstable board but Joe was never going to be the type of player who worries about probability and averages.

I doubt that today's game is going to promote future reckless gambling so there was no harm in it.

You must be very very rich if you think £20,000 is an insignificant sum of money, whatever use it is put to.

It's funny that at 3pm today, Mark Olver mentioned Joe at the studios (being the oldest contestant) but mentioned he is due to play in the next couple of days/within a week. Surprised it was actually today.
