As reported by Buzzerblog, it appears that CNBC’s revival of Deal or No Deal may be cancelled. Proof of this can be found on the show’s Twitter account, which sent out the following tweet today:

This account is no longer active. Please follow us @CNBCPrimeTV.

The show pulled modest ratings in its Wednesday evening timeslot, but a mid-season break that lasted from March to June 2019 ultimately killed any momentum it had. When the show returned, no one took any notice and the last of its 31 total episodes aired with virtually no fanfare. From what I read, those episodes were less than compelling and the majority of the contestants fared poorly.

On the positive side, CNBC’s Deal revival righted many of the wrongs of the original NBC version. Most notably, the pacing issues were solved and the majority of the contestants were likeable instead of being screaming idiots from Central Casting. Had they not taken that mid-season break, the show might have had a shot at being renewed.

I think the main reason for the show not being renewed is the high production costs.

When I heard CNBC was reviving Deal or No Deal with a $1,000,000 top prize, I thought they were going to use a $500,000 top prize board similar to the syndicated version's and have a Case 23/27 that can Double the contestant's winnings. That would make the average winnings roughly $30,000 an episode, which is just about manageable for a cable network. Their downfall was completely copying the NBC primetime version. It's not cost effective for a cable network to produce a show that gives away about $100,000 an episode AND has 26 models and celebrity guests to pay as well.
