Noel Edmonds walked round the pound table, looking warmly towards the camera.
“A quarter of a million pounds. Twenty two identical sealed boxes…and no questions - except one,” He turned around to look at the board behind him and clicked his fingers masterfully. “Deal or No Deal!”
The crazy chair was put into position and Noel ran towards the board ready to start another game, another epic episode of Deal or No Deal.
Getting his cue, he greeted the west and east wing fondly. “Good afternoon to you west wing! And greetings to you East wing!” He turned towards the studio audience and threw his arms up in the air. “Hello pilgrims!”
The pilgrims cheered loudly, as Noel sat in the crazy chair and looked into the camera.
“And you of course, are very welcome to the dream factory, and what a week it’s been!” he exclaimed.
“In case you missed it, we had Finny yesterday. And she proved to all of us, that even if you bring the tiny amounts to the table, it is still possible to win a huge, life changing sum of money.”
The players all smiled remembering.
Finny had, as Noel explained, been in the show for 27 games, and had just taken the banker for a ride. Although she lost the £250,000 in the first round, she had gone on to keep her power of four, intact, for a considerable amount of time, until it got to the stage where the Banker had realised that he had to take her seriously. After wonderful offers of £21,000, £32,000 and a rather naïve and hopeful offer of £45,000 with only the 1p and the £100,000 in play, Finny had stunned everyone by going on, and even, (much to the chagrin of everyone) taken the swap, and fortunately it turned out to be the correct decision, and she swapped a 1p box and won herself £100,000.
“So!” announced Noel. “The Banker is scared, but which one of these 22 expectant players will be making their way down the walk of wealth and into the crazy chair and be transfixed by those twenty two, now very familiar sums of money? Lets’ find out. Roll the names!”
The names of all the players flashed onto the board.
“Who,” said Noel mysteriously. “will be hoping to win big today? It’s you… Jonathan!”
The board stuck on his name, and the players went mad. Jonathan was a very popular young guy. He, more than anyone else who had seen Finny’s game was determined and pumped up, ready to win.
He made the bows, and then grinning boisterously, brought box number 5 to the table.
Putting the box firmly on the table, he smiled and Noel and shook his hand energetically.
Noel grimaced rather dramatically, and when Jonathan finally let go of his hand, Noel did a big show of flexing his fingers to see if they all worked.
“My word, I can see this is going to be an energised game!” he laughed. “Hello…welcome to your game.”
“Thanks.” smiled Jonathan, making himself comfortable in the chair.
“And here!” announced Noel grandly, picking up the card with Jonathan’s details on, “We have Jonathan Angelis. 22, from Stoke on Trent.”
Jonathan nodded.
“And what is this?” Noel inquired, picking up a furry toy dog off the box.
“That,” replied Jonathan, “Is the main reason why I’m here.”
“Please elaborate.”
“Well,” began Jonathan. “This dog actually belongs to my little brother, Michael. He’s 10, and he’s got downs syndrome.” Jonathan paused, and then said with a little emotion in his voice. “He gave me this as a good luck charm from him, and I’ve promised him that if we win a lot of money, me and mum are going to take him to Florida to see some alligators. Because he loves alligators.”
Noel smiled, listening to the story.
“So, Fluffy is here to help me.”
Jonathan continued on, and explained that things had been rather difficult for his family, as they didn’t have a lot of money, and so treatment and such for Michael had been difficult.
“True brotherly love, we’re talking here?” smiled Noel.
Jonathan nodded sincerely.
Noel took a deep breath, and asked Jonathan if he could confirm that he’d chosen box number five at random before the show.
“I did.” came the reply.
Noel explained about the independent adjudicator sealing the boxes, and then turned to Jonathan.
“Jonathan, for brothery love, give the banker an awful afternoon. Good luck!”
The pilgrims, and the players, emotionally charged after the story, cheered loudly and Jonathan grinned.
He looked around and said, “We’ll start with Ash. Number 13.”
Noel looked across at Ash, and grinned. “Come on, Sonic.”
Ash had quite thick hair, that he gelled up, into a Mohegan.
The pilgrims chuckled and Ash rolled his eyes, smiling bashfully. “Good luck Jon.” He said, and pulled the seal on the box. £1000 appeared.
Jonathan nodded enthusiastically and turned to Janine - a young girl with blonde hair and gorgeous eyes.
“The lovely, beautiful Janine.” Jonathan purred.
Janine giggled.
Noel raised his eyebrows. “Hang on a minute!” he exclaimed. “You may be the ladies man at the hotel, but keep it clean here!” This generated laughter from the pilgrims.
Janine winked flirtatiously at him, and pulled the seal on box 4, revealing £3,000.
“Cool.” Grinned Jonathan, clapping.
“Yep, those are honorary blues, especially at this point.” agreed Noel. “But try not to do any more reds,” he added.
Jonathan’s eyes rested on Daniel with box 16.
“Don’t even think about it.” Daniel said flatly. “It’s big.”
“Really?” Jonathan hesitated.
Noel put in that Daniel had the quarter of a million yesterday, and not only that, had correctly predicated it’s location.
Jonathan nodded, and walked back towards the east wing, and decided on box 19 with Jacqueline.
“Oooh, it rhymes!” she laughed raucously.
“Don’t start…” warned Noel.
“Good luck babe.” Jacqueline said warmly and opened the box. It contained £10,000.
The pilgrims exhaled uneasily, but Jonathan waved a hand, and told them it was ok.
He then asked Fiona to reveal box 2, and after some difficulty (much to the amusement of Noel) she finally pulled the lid and let 1p out.
The pilgrims cheered loudly, and Jonathan let out a huge “YEESSSSSS!”
Noel slapped him on the back. “Yes! 1p, take it away. You’re not stuck with that! Now, one more. Make it blue, and the £10,000 can be forgotten with ease.”
After some deliberation, Jonathan finally settled on box 22 with Annie, which to everyone’s delight contained 50p.
Jonathan breathed a sigh of relief and sat down again.
“How are you choosing?” asked Noel.
“Instinct.” replied Jonathan simply.
Suddenly, the Banker’s phone rang.
Noel picked it up.
“Hello Banker!” After a second, he chuckled, and looked up at Janine. “Yeah, sorry, Janine appears to be taken.”
Janine giggled madly, and Jonathan put in that there was nothing going on between them, not too convincingly which produced a “Yeah, right!” from the players.
Noel laughed. “Yes, we have a new Casanova, and a new Psychic it would appear.” Noel suddenly burst out laughing and held the phone to his mic.
The sound of the X-Files tune being hummed played to everyone. Noel continued with the call.
“But you’re not afraid? Right ok. Come on, stop messing about….Thank you.”
He replaced the receiver and turned to Jonathan.
“Even though he is denying any fear out of Daniel’s prediction, he isn’t treating the situation lightly. Your opening offer is £9,999.” announced Noel, which got applause from everyone.
Jonathan raised his eyebrows, obviously pleased.
“Does anyone EVER go at the first offer?” he grinned boyishly. “Ask me the question.”
“£9,999.” came the reply. “Deal or No Deal?”
Jonathan delivered a swift, but polite “No Deal.”
“Right!” Said Noel. “Carry on, with the small boxes, and we’re on our way!”
“Dominic, 21 please.” Beamed Jonathan.
Dominic had short, ginger, spiky hair and grinned at Jonathan. “Good luck mate!” He opened the box, and revealed £10.
Noel raised his eyebrows. “Hey, this is getting good… Keep it up!”
Jonathan wandered around a bit. He was thinking about all the numbers that meant a lot to him. Michael’s birthday, his mum’s birthday, his birthday… so to him, it made sense to get rid of meaningless numbers first.
“Brian, number one please.”
“Brian,” said Noel. “Welcome to the game.”
“Thank you.” replied Brian in a military like voice. He was wearing several medals, and was standing to attention.
“Please, open your box.”
Brian pulled the seal, and the home of the £50 was discovered.
The pilgrims and players cheered loudly.
Noel turned to Jonathan, very seriously.
“Now, don’t mess this up…we don’t want you to go home break…..” He frowned. “Did I say broke or break?”
“You said Break.” said Jonathan playing along.
“Break! What a good idea!” beamed Noel, and turned the camera. “Please do come back!”
The pilgrims applauded.
Soon, make up and stage management rushed onto the set to do whatever they had to do.
While a make up brush was being dabbed around his face, Jonathan was thinking of Michael.
“Don’t worry bro.” He thought. “We’re going to do this.”
Soon, they were ready to start again.
Noel welcomed back the viewers, and reminded them about the viewers prize, and then summed up the game so far.
The next box was important.
Jonathan looked around, and settled on box 15, which was being guarded by May.
“If this is blue,” put in Noel. “We are in a powerful situation - open it.”
May was an 80 year old, while haired lady, who everyone loved. “Good luck, sweetheart.” she cooed. “And if Janine gives up on you, there’s always me!”
This produced hysterical laughter from everyone, and with everyone in good spirits, May opened box 15 and showed everyone £100.
Cheering, clapping and general noise went on for at least twenty seconds, until the ringing of the phone cut it short.
Noel cheerfully answered the phone. “Hello!”
Jonathan chuckled and winked at May, and then Janine.
“Yes, it would appear May does like them young….so yeah…” Noel chuckled. “Two women who don’t want you. There’s always Brian….” Noel suddenly burst out laughing, and waved his hand at Brian. “Don’t worry, Bri, he made a rude joke about standing to attention. He’s being VERY immature!” he scolded down the phone. Brian laughed.
After a pause, Noel put the phone down.
“Doesn’t like the board, doesn’t like the fact that you’ve got all the girls, and he really doesn’t like the fact that he’s had to raise the offer as you had an all blue round! You’re offer is now £17,500.”
The pilgrims let out a “Oooh” as Jonathan grinned.
He seemed to think about it for a few seconds, then turned and said “I’m going into the hall of fame because I won a lot of money, not because I COULD have won a lot of money, so ask me the question Noel.”
The pilgrims clapped enthusiastically as the east and west wing cheered him on.
“£17,500.” said Noel. “Deal or No Deal?”
“Thank you Mr Banker, but…No Deal.” replied Jonathan happily.
More cheering as the game continued. Jonathan had really personalised the game, so everybody was 100% behind him.
He turned to the east wing and looked at Roberta, who was a very flamboyant middle aged woman, who wore her glasses at the end of her nose.
“Number 9 please darling!” he said smoothly.
“Good luck my little pudding!” said Roberta.
Noel chuckled, but laughter turn to groans as the home of the £50,000 was revealed.
“Aaaaargggh…” cried Noel. “We didn’t want that.”
“Hey, it’s gone.” shrugged Jonathan. “Can’t be helped.”
He turned quickly to Jennifer, who was looking extremely scared with Noel and the cameras.
“Number 11, Jen!” announced Jonathan.
“Erm…good luck.” whispered Jennifer, and opened the box, which to everyone’s horror, contained the £75,000.
Jonathan was looking less cool now. Jennifer looked like she was on the verge of tears. “I’m sorry!” she whimpered.
“Don’t worry babe.” Jonathan Soothed.
“Jonathan…” said Noel. “Do you want some help?
Jonathan turned to him, grinning. “What sort of help, Noel?”
Noel went to the cupboard in the pound table, and pulled out the woolly Lucky Hat, and began waving it around temptingly.
“Yeah,” laughed Jonathan. “Go on then!”
Noel shoved it on his head. “Right!” he declared. “Nothing can go wrong! The lucky hat cannot fail! Choose any box!”
“Ok then!” replied Jonathan jumping up and down excitedly. Normally, this would be normal, but with the lucky hat on his head, he looked silly enough to make the pilgrims laugh.
“Number 7! Craig!”
Craig smiled sweetly. “Good Luck Jonny!” And promptly delivered the £20,000, which was greeted to groans from the pilgrims.
Noel looked furious. He stormed up to Jonathan, ripped off the hat, and shouted. “GREG!”
Greg, the stage manager arrived on the floor.
“Greg…burn the lucky hat.” Noel ordered.
Greg left carrying the hat, shaking his head.
Jonathan was laughing his head off, but in all seriousness, the board was looking less powerful without the £20,000:
10p £5,000
£1 £15,000
£5 £35,000
£250 £100,000
£500 £250,000.
£750
The phone rang.
Noel picked it up miserably. “Hello.” he said sulkily.
“…Yes…it’s gone. Forever. We shall never see the woolly lucky hat again…”
The pilgrims chuckled, and Noel became serious again.
“Yeah, I thought you’d enjoy that round….” He laughed, and then put the phone down.
Jonathan looked expectantly at him.
“Yeah, he’s going on about losing two of your 5, as it is now 3 against 3. Your offer is £10,000 and a new hat for me!”
Everyone laughed and applauded.
“But seriously, £10K.” Noel said shortly.
“Yeah,” said Jonathan. He was seriously considering it. £10,000 could do a lot for Michael, and his mum. But could he change their lives? Could he take home enough money to make everyone at home’s lives happier?
Janine piped up. “ Babes, if you think about it, you’ve got a strong board there still. If that last round hadn’t been so rubbish, then you’d be ploughing on. Just don’t panic would be my advice.”
Jonathan smiled at her and nodded.
“Ask me the question Noel.”
Noel nodded his approval at Janine. “Good advice. Jonathan - £10,000. Deal or No Deal?”
Jonathan paused…. And eventually said “No Deal.”
The pilgrims and the wings cheered and Noel smiled broadly.
“Right!” cried Jonathan. “Let’s get those blues!”
He asked Sophie with Box 8, to give him a nice low amount, and she delivered the £1, which resulted in her and Jonathan dancing around over the box.
“Box 18! Sid!” shouted Jonathan over the cheering of the pilgrims.
Old guy Sid, shakily opened 18 and revealed the £500 and shook Jonathan’s hand warmly.
“Where are you going?!” cried Noel
“Shaun!” replied Jonathan.
“Shaun! Open your box! - AFTER THE BREAK!” Shouted Noel.
Everyone groaned, and Noel hid behind the pound table.
Jonathan was really excited. If box 3 had a low amount in it, then he was taking his family on the trip of a lifetime.
Noel spoke with him during the break, and realised just how much responsibility was on this young guy’s shoulders.
Soon, they were ready to start again, and Shaun, a 27 year old from Yorkshire with mad curly hair was ready to open box 3.
Noel told him to open it, and to mixed reactions, the £15,000 appeared.
The board now looked a lot more stable:
10p £5,000
£5 £35,000
£250 £100,000
£750 £250,000.
Noel grasped Jonathan on the shoulder. “That’s your board! Looks good!”
“It sure does mate!” smiled Jonathan.
The phone rang.
“Yeeeesss?” said Noel slowly. A flicker of worry appeared in his eyes. “He wants to talk to you. Don’t - be -fooled by him.” he emphasised.
Jonathan grinning broadly took the phone and spoke. “Hello, Mr Banker… Yeah I feel better now thanks. Even Stevens!… Oh have you….Right….Oh well, thank you…” He looked at Noel and shook his head in disbelief.
After another second he beamed and put the phone down.
“Ouch.” he said.
Noel narrowed his eyes. “What did he say?”
“He SAID… that’s he’s been looking at flights for Florida, and apparently you can get them quite cheap now.”
The studio gasped.
“Which…” Jonathan continued. “Is what he plans to get my box for. And he offered me his magic number - £26,000.” The pilgrims wooed, but Jonathan was in a personal dilemma.
The board looked really tempting to go on, but it could go wrong so quickly.
Noel could see his torment. “How can we help?” he asked.
“Sweep would be good actually.” answered Jonathan quietly.
Noel walked towards the end of the east wing. “So,” he said to the players - “just Deal or No Deal.”
Unfortunately the opinions varied. Janine, May, Andrew, Ash and Roberta were advising him to deal, but the others were telling him to go on.
To make matters worse, the pilgrims had the same split opinions when Noel asked the dealers to stand up. About 45% percent of them stood.
Janine suddenly cried out “It’s your game Jon! Do what you think!”
Janine’s words seemed to be inspiring Jonathan. His eyes lit up and he asked Noel for the question.
“£26,000.” said Noel slowly. “Deal….or No Deal?”
Jonathan looked at Fluffy on the table and stroked it’s head. “No Deal.” he replied.
The pilgrims gasped, but the players cheered him on. Games didn’t get more personal than this.
“Right. We want…no…NEED… that bravery to be rewarded. Where are we going?”
“Deirdre…17. Please babe. Give me a blue.” pleaded Jonathan.
Deirdre winked at him and blew a kiss. Then, she ripped the seal off, and revealed the 10p. The roof was blown off the studio and Jonathan was visibly moved by everyone’s support.
He turned to Wilma. Box 20. “Go on Wilma.”
Wilma looked horrified that the pressure was on her, but wished him the best of luck and slowly opened the box. And slowly everyone realised that Jonathan’s chances of being a quarter of a millionaire had just disintegrated as the big one was revealed. The groan was as loud as the cheer for the 10p. Jonathan nodded and smiled. “It’s not meant to be. There‘s still -”
Suddenly the phone rang. Noel picked it up quickly. “Hello?”
Jonathan looked at the board confused. He still had one box left in this round.
Noel exhaled long and hard and put the phone down.
“He’s predicting you’re next box.” He began. “He’s guessing that’s you’re going to leave Daniel till the end, as Daniel is clearly right about having a high amount in box 16, which leaves you with a low amount in your box as he doesn’t believe you have the 35k either. In other words, he’s convinced he’s got himself a blue winner already.”
Jonathan looked at Daniel levelly. “He’s not doing mind games with me. Daniel, open it - now.”
Daniel looked surprised. “You sure mate?”
“Go!” came the blunt reply.
Daniel ripped off the seal and revealed to everyone’s despair, the £100,000.
Jonathan collapsed on the pound table, as Daniel closed his eyes in grief.
The factory went silent.
“Well, the banker now knows not to play mind games with you.” encouraged Noel. “And you could still go away with a higher amount that anything offered to you so far. Do NOT lose hope..eh?” He patted him on the shoulder.
Jonathan smiled sincerely. “Yeah, let’s get me 35 thousand.” The pilgrims cheered.
The phone rang, and Noel answered “Yes, you manipulative banker?”
Jonathan grinned, and looked at his board:
£5 £5,000
£250 £35,000.
£750
Noel groaned and slammed the phone down.
“Although he compliments you on turning his mind game back on him , he’s not ignoring the state of the board that he says was,” and Noel did his banker voice. “ ‘ONCE SO MUCH MORE POWERFUL…The offer is £1000.” The pilgrims and players groaned, but Jonathan suddenly looked as determined as ever. He was NOT losing this.
“Ask me the question Noel, quickly.” said Jonathan.
“Jon, £1000, Deal or No Deal?”
“No Deal!” He hollered and turned to the pilgrims for a quick shout of “Come On!”
“Now,” said Noel. “If you really wanna scare him, you know what you have to do.”
“All blue round?” Jonathan replied, and Noel nodded.
Andrew with 14 was selected, one of Jonathan’s closest friends since he’s arrived, and nervously he opened the box with the £750, which generated cheers.
Jonathan suddenly realised, that he had, without meaning too, left his, Michael’s and their mum’s birthday till last. 6 was his, 12 was Michaels, and 10 was his mum’s. There was no question in his mind about which box was next.
“Number 6, Charlie.” Jonathan requested. Charlie said how much he’d be missed and pulled the £5 out of the equation.
Noel turned to him. “You’re doing it Jon! Whatever you’re doing, you’re doing it right! Keep going! Anything other than the 35 is perfect!”
But Jonathan was left with 10 and 12. He decided to save Michael till last, and asked Iris to decide just how the game was going to finish by revealing the contents of box 10. Iris sweetly said that whatever happened, his family would be proud of him, which got an “Awww” and a hug from Jonathan. However, Iris got lifted up into the air and spun around, when his mum’s box was revealed to contain the £250!
The studio went crazy. Noel shouted “Yes! Yes! Yes!” at the top of his voice and everyone who was near Jonathan on the wings kissed and hugged him.
It wasn’t over yet, as the phone rang.
Noel grinning from ear to ear, picked up the phone and said “Hello Mr -I’m-soon-going-to-lose-35K-Banker! Cause if he’s got it, he’s gonna win it!”
The pilgrims cheered.
The phone call was rather short and Noel told Jonathan that the Banker was not a happy man about having to offer him £15,000.
Jonathan appeared to consider it. He turned to Noel and said, “Do you think I’ll get the swap?”
Noel hesitated, and said he didn’t know, but the phone rang and the banker told him, that, yes, he could have a swap if he wanted.
Jonathan smiled broadly and asked for the question straight away.
Noel said softly, “Is 12 Michael?” and Jonathan nodded smiling.
“In which case,” finished Noel. “£15,000 - Deal or No Deal?”
“No deal!” cried Jonathan excitedly.
Noel picked up box number 5, and took it across to Mitch.
Mitch had been with the show for 21 games, and had openly stated that he thought swaps were a bad thing, and was glaring playfully at Michael, as he accepted 5 and gave 12 to Noel.
Noel then started the drama.
“Jonathan, you have given us, THE most amazing game. We thought everything was over, and then you clawed you way back up. The banker is now sat his chair, terrified. You have scared the guy.”
Noel pulled the seal.
“I really hope Michael’s box has brought you £35,000. I want nothing more, believe me.”
Noel waited, for about 5 seconds, and lifted the lid.
The studio went wild - the £35,000 was in box 12!
Noel grabbed Jonathan who was sat stunned in the chair and gave him a manly hug. “You did it! You flipping did it!” he laughed.
The pilgrims were on their feet, and the east and west wing were jumping up and down.
After the noise had died down, Noel looked over to Mitch and asked him to reveal the £5,000.
When that was done, he turned back to Jonathan.
“You are incredible. And I think it’s safe to say that you’ve given us one of the most emotionally fuelled games we’ve seen in a LONG time. You’re going to Florida. Jonathan! £35,000!”
Noel slapped him on the shoulder and walked towards the pilgrims to do the viewers completion, and the second he was out of the way, the players were on Jonathan.
All Jonathan could think about was how his mum was going to react to the news, and couldn’t wait to tell Michael, that the alligators, were no longer a dream.
