Hi all. Just to introduce myself, I'm Jonathan, a blogger at BritishGaming.co.uk - and on my desk right now is a copy of this year's DVD game, Family Challenge. And I know that soon there'll be 3 more for competition winners. :D

Now, I'm no DOND expert, but I know a bit, and will be willing to answer any questions you have.

Key thing though, is the game is MUCH faster! In the box selection screen, it's a 3D rendered view of the 'dream factory', showing 6 boxes at once.

Hi Jonathan

Welcome to the site :D

It's great to hear that the box selection is much quicker and easier on the new version of the game, as that was a BIG drawback on the first DVD game.

Is there any chance you could do a few screenshots of the game in action to give us an idea of what the gameplay looks like?

Oooh, I'll do better than that! I'm aiming to do a video review, so I'll have plenty of stuff to show. I think I'll go take some crappy mobile phone pictures in a second though.

THANK GOD!!! That was one of the big setbacks of last year's, really glad they've sorted it out!

Really can't wait until this is out, I know some players who are on it but not all of them!

It wouldn't have mattered which box you'd went with anyway as it was a sequence!

I hope this one is random and isn't just about turn-arounds.

I'm gonna do a sequence test in a second (play the exact same game a few times, see what I go for), but a quick question: on the Deal/No Deal bit, this has a nice little weird thing where you can 'Personalise the game', with some strange links from Noel: with 'lucky dip', 'ask the banker' or a poetry one. Was that in the first game?

No, you could just ask for advice, and either Noel or some players (mostly Noel), would give you some.

At least it's faster, it was what put most people of last year

Do the boxes actually contain anything or is it like the last DVD where a figure flashes up on it?

This one will hopefully be a big improvement over last year but I wonder how many people will be put off buying it after last year's attempt.

The boxes open with the number already in it, no pop up.

How do they do that, you ask? It cuts to a closeup of them opening the box, so I assume they recorded each player opening their box to each amount, zoomed in a bit so there is no continuity worries with the little advice hope thing from the person on the wings beforehand.

Edit: Small hickup with the video: currently waiting on the go ahead from Channel 4.

A few questions.

    1. If you have 1p and 10p left, does someone come yup and say "This is a tricky decision, I really don't know what to do?"

    2. How many repetivite clips of "Great!" ,"That's just what we wanted," "Next one," "Oh no, we really didn't want that?"

    3. What music does it have on it?

    4. Is it worth buying it?

I imagine it would be based on sequences as I don't think DVD players can generate random sequences as computers can, but I may be wrong.

Doing full sequence testing would probably involve too much time and not too worth it for the website I'm doing it for, so that one will have to be up in the air...

1. If you have 1p and 10p left, does someone come yup and say "This is a tricky decision, I really don't know what to do?"
Haven't had that scenario yet. However, in terms of advice, some of them are just "I didn't win much, so think carefully, and you can win a lot!"

2. How many repetivite clips of "Great!" ,"That's just what we wanted," "Next one," "Oh no, we really didn't want that?"
They don't come up too often, and not at all once you've dealt.

3. What music does it have on it?
Standard show music. Theme, suspense, player selection I think...

4. Is it worth buying it?
If you like Deal or No Deal, it seems so. In comparison to last year's one this is so much better, and it adds lots of little things in the style of the show. If you don't find the concept of Deal or No Deal fun (which obviously won't be the case of the people on this board), obviously it's not worth it.

The bonus clips: short, but amusing. A mix of compilations, and a small behind the scenes one, with some new footage and also some from the show where they showed the boxes being assigned.

I'll try and get some visual stuff of this up soon... normally I have no trouble clearing this, but as it's all DVD stuff of a TV show with filmed stuff and Channel 4 have to approve it... I'd be very suprised if I'm not allowed to do some screencaps at the least. :P

God with the pictures forum and peoples games screenshots, they can't force you to take it down :)

Sadly, legally they can, especially with is being on DVD. And, it's a 'check disc' they sent, so they do have to approve using clips.

BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER AS I HAVE PERMISSION NOW! YAY! Hopefully I'll get a small video clip done over the weekend: all my tapes are currently full of a Mario and Sonic game event today.

Have just received my review copy of the Family Challenge DVD :D

Just been having a quick play :P

The gameplay is a LOT faster than the original game, and you can speed it up even more by going into options and turning off the little snippets between each box opening (i.e. Audience cheers/contestants praise/Noel)

Another improvement is that you can choose which box you want to play with in your game, rather than being stuck with a box given to you as in the original game...

The featurettes are great as well... These will have a almost everyone in stitches, especially the Noel one :P

I'll post an update, and do a full review later after I've had a more in depth play :P
