Seeing the thread about Andy Kelly starring on the Big Quiz on Radio 2 tomorrow got me thinking about players who have been arrogant towards the banker.

Andy Kelly, who played in November 2005, was famously aggressive and arrogant towards the banker in his show after he was annoyed at how the banker treated Raj, who won 10p, the previous game. It paid off for Andy, and he walked away with a nice £20,000, and beat the banker, despite hitting the £250k in the first box.

Andy certainly caused a lot of controversy on the internet as to whether or not people liked him, due to his aggressive and arrogant nature towards the banker. Personally, I enjoyed it and it was one of the best, if not the best, classic banker battles.

What would happen nowadays if a player was aggressive to the banker as Andy Kelly was back then? Would the banker be scared and offer good offers? Or would the banker get angry with the player and offer no money at all or just offer swaps?

I have never seen that game but I think its petty, it would be turning the show into panto.

Personally, I thought Andy Kelly's game was a classic, back to the basics player vs. banker battle - and he did it with style. Maud - you have a good point about it being a panto - I don't think Andy Kelly's game was a panto, however these days if a player was aggressive as Andy was, I think it could become a bit of a panto - the banker would get in a "strop" and his "mother" would come on the phone to sort the player out... :?

I think the banker respects contestants who stand up to him, but as we've seen recently, he will test those who are too aggressive with low offers to trap them or even no offer swaps!

I don't think it would work at all really, just make the banker make derisory offers to try and humiliate the player so he has the last laugh.

That was Old-School DoND, such a response nowadays would have far more punishing repercussions from the Banker. He prefers deference to defiance.

Still, it would be refreshing to see another Andy Kelly step up...

Actually, Andy Kelly's game feels more like a preview of DoND's future to me - big early offers, (over)confident contestant play and comedy Banker intervention are now all just par for the course!

Though check what Noel says at the first offer. That speech is going in my sig...

Agreed. The irony wasn't lost on me either, after the clap trap Noel comes out with at the start of every show following a deal which, in hindsight, was too early!! :-D

The banker can have all the bravado he likes but if someone is going to go to the end and has a high number in their box or can successfully pick out where the 250K is in the wings for example, then deference to the banker isn't really necessary! :D
