The article:

Gary Lineker is UK television's most watched presenter, new figures have shown.

The BBC's football anchor was seen by two-thirds of viewers (36.4 million) during 2006 - a figure boosted by the World Cup as well as his regular Match Of The Day appearances.

At second, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host Chris Tarrant was watched by 32.9 million. Top woman, despite her failed chat show, was Davina McCall. Thanks to Big Brother 7 she was watched by 30.7 million.

Media agency Media Planning Group, which released the figures, pointed out that five of the top six were men over 40.

Jim McDonald, head of broadcast, added: "This list gives us some fantastic insight into which personalities British TV viewers are tuning into watch. And they seem to know what they like, with tried and tested favourites commanding the top positions.

It really is quite amazing and wonderful to see Noel, who was absent from television presenting between 1999 and 2005, is still able to get the viewers... it shows what a true TV professional he is, that in this day of age, with new presenters on the block, such as Davina McCall and Dermot O'Leary, and multi-channel television dragging viewers away from terrestrial channels, Noel has still got the old sparkle he always had...
