It's been announced that there are going to be 2 special shows on at Christmas with the top prizes increased to £500,000 in each episode!!!

Here is the extract from the Guardian Media announcing it....

Quote:
Channel 4 is to pin its Christmas ratings hopes on its hit gameshow Deal or No Deal, with two festive prime time specials in which the prize fund will be doubled to £500,000.
The two special episodes will air in prime time on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, in a move that will give both BBC1 - the traditional festive ratings winner - and ITV1 a run for their money.

It is the first time Endemol, which makes the Noel Edmonds-fronted show, has increased the jackpot - it normally stands at £250,000.

For the two episodes, the £15,000 box will be replaced with a £500,000 prize.

Channel 4 will give viewers a double bite of the gameshow over the two festive days, with the series' regular episodes continuing to air in their usual daytime slot.

An Endemol spokesman said the doubling of the prize fund would add some "extra festive suspense" to the show.

Meanwhile, Channel 4 is still understood to be in discussions with Endemol about extending its deal to screen the show.

The two parties are thought to be in exclusive discussions about the show, although no deal to extend the current two-year contract - which runs until the end of next year - has yet been completed.

There seems to be a slight error in the report talking about the £15,000 being replaced by £500,000, but a very interesting move.

I don't like that. It's not fair to give two players a chance to win more than what the other 300+ players could have won. Gah, don't go changing things, Endemol.

I presume they mean that the £15,000 will be removed so they can fit in the £500k without there being 23 boxes. So it'd be like this:

£1k
£3k
£5k
£10k
£20k
£35k
£50k
£75k
£100k
£250k
£500k

Still, though, WOW. I read about it on Bother's Bar earlier...sounds really amazing, but Endemol, PLEASE don't schedule it against Doctor Who. I'm begging you.

To be fair, it is only for two shows, not a permanent thing. It'd be amazing if someone had a final two of £250k and £500k, though.

I'll love to see the £500k label. But they'll either have to make 24 boxes, or add another blue. It will also cause excel sheets to cry out with anger.

Yes, it sounds *beep* *beep*. I think this could ruin the show for me...why do they have to change things??

It will mess up the stats, but it's good to have changes. I like it. Just imagine box 4 being the only box to have had the £500,000.

Well spotted, didn't think of that :D

I'm still not sure myself about the increase in prize money for 2 shows as I've felt the same as never_wrong in the past.....

I wonder how the bankers offers are going to be affected while the £500,000 is still in play?! If it's there after the third round with some fairly decent back up it could produce some BIG offers!!!!

Its a fact this one-off has already been done in France (before making it permanent in September 2006) in the past by doubling their top prize.

I can see them doubling it permanently here too if this is a rating success :?

When they made €1 Million permanent in September, massive changes were brought it. So I doubt it will happen here.

That's great! When I went down to Bristol last week on Tuesday Noel did announce that there would be special shows for Christmas Day and Boxing Day but he didn't say anything about that! :) We've been talking on a number of threads about Endemol increasing their prize fund to boost ratings, I wonder if this could lead to more of the same....

Well I guess it's a natural progression for the show - though you would expect them to wait until the original top prize was won.

When they set the original prize structure, they surely could not have predicted the ratings it would get. (I wonder what they budgeted for - 2m each day perhaps?) The recent LTL prize increases are evidence of that, they clearly feel there is potential to get lots more calls. So perhaps it was only going to be a matter of time before we saw the players benefit from the show's popularity as well.

Absolutely! But as I said previously, maybe it has been won already.... or Ratings are moving down quickly

Well the ratings are at their highest since May. Who knows about the other possibility though... think there's a couple of people on here who might know one way or the other!

Why oh why do Endemol insist on changing things? The format is fine as it, I totally agree it's unfair to increase the top prize for just two contestants and not for everyone else.

I can see why they've done it, to win the Xmas ratings war, but I personally think its a *beep* idea.
