The US version that was never broadcast

The show was originally picked up by ABC in early 2004 for launch that spring. A pilot was produced with Briton Patrick Kielty as host and a $2.5 million top prize. The network decided against airing the program before its premiere, and eventually lost its rights to the show

Patrick Kielty probably turned it down so he can do that Love Island thing on ITV1.

Personally, I'd ask him why he'd want to do such a thing if that were the case.

NBC doesn't know how lucky they were to grab the rights to the American DoND. For those that don't know, NBC typically has some of the worst ratings here in the US. Before DoND, NBC was sometimes rated as far down as 4th place!

(List of American Networks: CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, PBS, WB and UPN. Though the last two aren't available to the whole country and will be merging in the fall into "CW")

Judging by the massive ratings NBC got, it's safe to say that ABC made a HUGE mistake in passing DoND up!

I think I'm right in saying that the BBC here in the UK turned down DOND before it was offered to Channel 4 - I think that's correct.

I did get to talk to the exec producer of DoND a while ago, and he told me about ABC Deal or No Deal, which wasn't aired.

The show was very Austin Powers-ish. The models danced all the time. They had a sexy female banker doing the offers vocally. There was a quiz portion. ABC DEMANDED a European host or the show would not go to air. What NBC ordered was a high drama show. ABC wanted a classic throwback show, which would not work. I think the top 2 figures on the chain were $750,000 and $2,500,000. Yes, I'm serious. Thank god it didn't air or DoND would have been off in an instant.

If that was the case then what on earth were the BBC thinking - at least that would have made my license fee worthwhile.
