Sorry if this has already been posted but I haven't got time to look. Did anyone see the Daily Express today - it's got an article in it about Steve receiving an anonymous donation of £9000 to have two further IVF treatments. I've tried searching for it on-line but it isn't there.
Also, they have donated £91,000 for the charity in India (I think - read it very quickly before heading out to work!). When I get home from work, I'll type the whole article in here if anybody wants me to (I'm a speed typist so it won't take long!). :D

Viewer bankrolls TV couple's IVF

A NEWLYWED couple desperate for a baby were given hope by a mystery millionaire benefactor last night after appearing on TV's Deal Or No Deal.

Steve Davies, 38, was so short of money after four failed IVF attempts that he went on the show to try to win enough for one more treatment.

He left desappointed when he fell short of his £5,000 target. But last night he and wife Lynette, 29, were stunned when a wealthy viewer came forward to give them £9,000 to fund two more attempts.

Lynete said: "I couldn't believe it. I had to sit down and get a glass of water, I was so emotional. I could not believe that a stranger would do that for us."

The couple, of Westhoughton, near Bolton, wed last year and had spent around £20,000 to fufil their dream to become parents. Steven won £3,000 on the Channel Four show hosted by Noel Edmonds, leaving him £2,000 short of the amount needed.

Days later the benefactor contacted producers to make the offer on condition he remain anonymous. Steve said: "We got a call from the show saying they had some fantastic news for us. They said a viewer was touched by what they had seen and donated £9,000. "I was speechless and thouht they were winding me up, but when I saw Noel announce it on the telly on another show it hit home."

"I would not know what to say to the person who helped us out. Thank you is not enough. It restores your faith in humankind - all the bad news you read about and then something like this happens."

The couple, who run a tool hire business, can only show their appreciation by sending a letter to producers who will pass it on to the Good Samaritan.

Lynette said: "If everything goes to plan and we have a boy we will probably call him Noel."

The benefactor also donated £91,000 to another contestant who went on the show seeking money for an African orphanage.

A spokewoman for production company Endemol, said: "This does not happen very often but clearly this case has touched somebody's heart."

That has actually made my day :-) I wish them all possible success with the treatment.

They are so lucky, and it shows that there are still some good people in the world, somewhere. If Steve was that short on cash, maybe he shouldn't have gambled at the £25,000 offer. These two got lucky, but I'd say my motto for this programme is "If you can't afford winning a low amount, don't gamble."

This made the BBC News last night - featured clips of his show as well, him explaining their situation at the start, and then his dreams shattered when he chose Suzi's box which had the £250,000.

It went on to say they never expected people to be so generous and they were ever so grateful.

Wonder what people would have thought if they knew he turned down £25,000 earlier in the game?

Probably harden their attitude against risk-takers, I bet! (Pun in wording half-intended.)

I agree with you. If you can't bear the thought of winning a blue or can't afford to win a blue, then deal. If you're going to be very disappointed if the amount in your box is higher than your deal, then no deal. Simple as that.

I don't think I'd criticise someone dealing if they stated why they 'needed the money' ( I'd have rather seen Matty deal early than wat happened for instance).
Although I do obviously like to see people with decent current circumstances gamble a bit.

Not sure about the 'donation' really? :?

I'm not sure about it either. It's a nice gesture but I can't help thinking of the other players who have tried to raise money for charity and they've won low amounts (e.g. Gabrielle (1)'s £1,000 which the banker doubled to £2,000 as it was for charity).

Note that Gabrielle won a low amount through no fault of her own - she simply had bad luck. Whereas Steve did have the opportunity to bail out at £25,000 which undoubtedly he should've done if he needed the money that much. From what I can remember, the £25k offer was one of those that was justifiable either way, but probably worth no dealing but obviously worth dealing if you had his situation. His game was one where £20k - £25k targetism would've been an ideal attitude to take!

And Harry didn't do too badly but it felt a bit flat at the end when he dealt £9k on a £5k / £15k finish and had £15k in his box.

I'm not saying the donor shouldn't have donated, but I'm not sure why Harry and Steve got money from a viewer but others playing for charity who won low presumably haven't got extra money.

I guess it depends who is watching. This donor may have only seen Harry's and Steve's games. Perhaps if he (or she, lets not be sexist) had been watching another show where a player wanted the money for charity, then they would have got it.
