Just browsing Google when a news result brought up a link to the letters page of the Liverpool Echo.

The letter is a complaint over the "unfair" offer of £3,000 offered to Margaret (3rd March) at 2-box with 1p vs £20,000.

Deal Or Unfair Deal

WAS anyone else disgusted at the outcome of the Channel 4 programme Deal Or No Deal last week?

There were two boxes involved, a blue one with 1 penny and a red one with £20,000.

The crudest calculation of probability produces 50% of £20,000. The banker offered the lady contestant only £3,000, which was a lot less than seemed fair. The contestant’s stake in the game had reached an even chance of winning £20,000 – which is surely worth £10,000.

It’s Channel 4’s money, and they are entitled to create the rules, but the least one would expect is for offers to reflect probability. She was pressured into a gamble and ended up with one penny.

How can Channel 4 deliberately make a flagrantly inadequate offer so as to prevent a contestant receiving what they have fairly and squarely achieved?

Doesn’t Noel Edmonds himself have any say in the matter? Surely he wouldn’t concur with this.

There must be some sort of mathematical algorithm available whereby fair odds can be calculated right from the beginning to the end of the game.

Why don’t they do the decent thing and make fair offers to contestants?

Now obviously the Banker would never offer £10,000 at that stage, which I think is only right, because if he did then everyone would deal it. I do think the offer should of been at around £5,000 or above.

Plus they mention Noel and his say in the matter, which obviously he has no say. Whether he thinks the offer is good or not.

I was a bit annoyed to see a second 3K offer after sharron - the banker is allowed to be mean but 5K, perhaps 6K or something would have been slightly more appropriate.

i know it's a game show and 3K isn't huge 'potential amount' to 'lose' but most people would no deal that unless really desperate so hardly a decision there.

I can think of far worse DOND-related things to "write in about" anyway, such as PJ's swap offer. Anyway, surely there are more important local issues to write to your local paper about? :?

If they want to complain about an offer, complain about 52p Irene's 1k 5-box offer with 75k up there. THAT was "unfair."

I think this viewer seriously needs to go out and get herself a life, I hear they're going quite cheap these days.

Not only is the fact that she complained ridiculous but so is the complaint itself- £3,000 on a 1p/£20,000 finish may not be fair but that's tough, the game isn't meant to be fair or easy. It's tough luck that she ended up with 1p but if she'd have ended up with £20,000 then would the woman would only be moaning if the banker had offered £10,000 or something that she wouldn't have turned down and therefore missed out on a lot more than £3,000? Would she feck.

Nope it's Richard Matthews of Norris Green. If you look closely the names come at the end of the letters.

Precisely. But that was because she won the higher of the two amounts, and thus automatically it is seen as a very fair offer for the circumstances, which of course it was not, by at least £30,000.

Mary on the other hand was given an offer of the same sort of generosity, but because she won the lower of the amounts, and England being the capital for fake sympathy, everyone was suddenly on her side and said she should've won more. And this guy obviously rarely watches DoND, because if he did he'd know that Glenn hardly ever offers the exact mean, this chance is greatly reduced with the 1p in play.
First of all there's no Should or Shouldn't about it - there's Could or Couldn't, if you know what I mean. He could have offered £10,000, but by no means should he have done. He's free to do what he wants in the game.
And as I said, Richard evidently expects all offers to be spot on the mean at two-box at least, else he wouldn't be writing in.

Note that he lives on Norris Green aswell.

Like Tom Hanks and his football on that island in 'Cast Away', it looks like it's just me and the bots here now. But that's alright, we're having a grand old time. Aren't we, Wilson? WILSOOOON?!

A few of us who were once part of the furniture, once stalwarts of the grand and extravagant, exuberant and thriving forum, have receded back into the walls, still faintly visible, still here as poignant, reminding relics of an era gone by; but most of us have vanished, forever immersed in the mists of time.
