Gomes. Absolute howler of a season. But is he actually the worst in Prem history?

13 absolutely clueless keepers. Which one is the worst?

Gomes wins my vote too, but not coz of it being the most recent.

You look at all these, they've made some right howlers. But all the others take it on the chin and look to the next game - Gomes has admitted his confidence has been shattered coz of his mistakes...and he needs to put things behind him else he's not ever going to get back to his very best. And he can be a top class goalie on a good day too!

Things like this are always a bit risky - the old phrase comes to mind that 'it's better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt!'.

Heurelho Gomes represented Brazil 11 times, in an era in which his national team was spoilt for choice in the goalkeeping department; he was later an ever-present for Watford in the Premier League, and won that club's 'player of the season' award in 2016. Clueless?

Kelvin Davis is a name fond to my heart; in his decade with the almighty Saints, he cemented his place as one of our all-time legendary players, his consistency and presence as a leader being the bedrock of the team's climb back to the Premier League. There's a reason he cost a million pounds in the 2000s, and it wasn't because he was clueless. *beep* off 'Noel-Blobby', you *beep*.

Massimo Taibi spent the majority of his career in Serie A - just because you've never been bothered to pay attention to football outside your domestic top division, it doesn't follow that the standard elsewhere is lower. In fact, it's often higher. Besides, one mistake in one match does not make a man 'clueless'.

Craig Forrest - 263 league appearances in 12 years with Ipswich, then five years as back-up at West Ham; oh, and 56 caps for Canada. Clueless?

Julian Speroni - fifteen years with one club, Crystal Palace, and first-choice goalkeeper for eight of those. Clueless?

Manuel Almunia - mercurial, true, but clueless? I think not. His career speaks for itself.

Richard Kingson - why, because he was Ghanaian or something? One of the best national sides in Africa and, for a while, with him in it, also the world...and he's got 93 caps (and one goal) to show for that 'clueless' career of his...

Kostas Chalkias - you can't judge a man's credentials by the performances he put in while playing for Portsmouth Football Club. Come on, it's an island about as upmarket as an 1840s penal colony, with a feral population to match. Let's not take the pricks too seriously...

Peter Enckelman - YES ALRIGHT HE WAS CLUELESS

Roy Carroll - he wasn't clueless, he was just suffering from unrelated problems. When he was clear of those, he was a fantastic goalkeeper, as evidenced by the fact that he ended up playing for Northern Ireland until he was 40...

Gary Sprake - he retired seventeen years before the Premier League was even invented. I don't even know what else to say. This is ludicrous.

Stephen Bywater - yep, I'll agree with you on that one.

Scott Carson - went on to become the G.O.A.T. Simple. ;) (but seriously, he wasn't that bad)

So it's between Bywater and Enckelman then for me, but to be honest with you, I think I'll nominate one who was even more clueless than any of those already listed -

I'm nominating Noel_Blobby.

Like Tom Hanks and his football on that island in 'Cast Away', it looks like it's just me and the bots here now. But that's alright, we're having a grand old time. Aren't we, Wilson? WILSOOOON?!

A few of us who were once part of the furniture, once stalwarts of the grand and extravagant, exuberant and thriving forum, have receded back into the walls, still faintly visible, still here as poignant, reminding relics of an era gone by; but most of us have vanished, forever immersed in the mists of time.

I think the cinematography played its part here, Taibi crumpled and hunched over, as if he was midway to a handstand, as the ball pathetically trickled behind him in front of an Old Trafford crowd that ALL reacted the exact same way, mouth agape and hands to the head. The howls of disbelief far outweighed the away end's cheers.

His hairstyle made him look a bit hapless too. If this was a 'cooler' looking 'keeper it's still a memorable and memeable moment but not the W.O.A.T it's said to be.

Yeah, I think you've hit the nail square on the head mate, I'm obligated as a Saints fan to at least express gratitude to Massimo for his generous gift that day, but it still wasn't *that* awful, especially given the potential he'd shown in his first few appearances! Anyone who can be man of the match against Liverpool on their debut has to be good at their job. :)
