Not so much a story as a World Cup. Here's a sample:

FIFA have decided to alter the qualification groups so other continents [other than Europe] are more represented.
Europe : 12
Asia : 5
Oceania : 2
Africa : 6
N. America : 3

And as such, these teams qualified. [* means seeded]

EUROPE

England*
France*
Germany*
Holland
Portugal
Croatia
Spain*
Italy*
Hungary
Czech Republic
Turkey
Belgium

ASIA

Japan
Saudi Arabia
South Korea
India
China

N. AMERICA

USA
Mexico*
Costa Rica

S. AMERICA

Brazil*
Ecuador
Uruguay
Argentina*

AFRICA

Nigeria
Cameroon
Tunisia
Morocco
South Africa
Western Sahara

OCEANIA

Australia
New Zealand

Germany were drawn into Group A, automatically as hosts.

GROUP A
Germany
Uruguay
Morocco
Saudi Arabia

GROUP B
England
Nigeria
Australia
New Zealand

GROUP C
Brazil
Japan
Portugal
Western Sahara

GROUP D
Spain
Czech Republic
Costa Rica
India

GROUP E
Mexico
Belgium
South Korea
China

GROUP F
France
Croatia
Cameroon
South Africa

GROUP G
Argentina
USA

Hungary

GROUP H

Potential shocks : Tunisia, Western Sahara [who FIFA finally accepted], either Oceanian team or the USA.

First matches coming soon!

Day One :

Germany vs Uruguay

This was a close one to call. Uruguay were the UFWC champions [where the title is passed around in boxing-championship fashion] and were keen to defend their title. Alas, it was not to be. Klose, Neuville and Frings put those efforts down the plughole in a 3-0 win.
Germany become UFWC title holders

Morocco vs Saudi Arabia

Very, very tight, until around the 80th minute. Then, Morocco made error after error to let the Saudis through. An Al-Harthi double ended any hopes of a fightback as his triumphant team won 2-0.

Code:
GROUP A

  Team name     P W D L F A Pts
1 Germany       1 1 0 0 3 0  3
2 S. Arabia     1 1 0 0 2 0  3
3 Morocco       1 0 0 1 0 2  0
4 Uruguay       1 0 0 1 0 3  0

Day Two :

England vs Nigeria

This should have been a walkover. 3-0. 4-0. 5-0. But, Steve McLaren had the Three Lions playing the 'Boro way - boring. A scrambled goal by Owen was all that was in it to give them a 1-0 win.

Australia vs New Zealand

Two Oceanian teams determined to prove their power. Viduka had a goal disallowed for offside, and Aloisi sent off. But the All Blacks could not break down 10 men in a 0-0 draw.

Code:
GROUP B

  Team name     P W D L F A Pts
1 England       1 1 0 0 1 0  3
2 Australia     1 1 0 0 0 0  1
3 New Zealand   1 0 0 1 0 0  1
4 Nigeria       1 0 0 1 0 1  0

Day Three:

Brazil vs Japan

The Selecao were back to their old ways. A Ronaldo double, Ronaldinho's hat-trick, Ze Roberto's last-minute goal and an own goal by Nakata [who later got sent off] gave the 2006 quarter-finalists a 7-0 victory.

Portugal vs Western Sahara

The Sahari had never been recognised by FIFA. And they were out for revenge. A shock goal by Semara after just 19 seconds was cancelled out by Ronaldo's effort from 35 yards out. But, the Africans wouldn't give up. El-Hamra netted on 89 minutes to give his team a shock 2-1 win.

Code:
GROUP C

  Team name     P W D L F A Pts
1 Brazil        1 1 0 0 7 0  3
2 Western Sahara1 1 0 0 2 1  3
3 Portugal      1 0 0 1 1 2  0
4 Japan         1 0 0 1 0 7  0

I didn't even know the Western Sahara had a flag! :smt119

And the day FIFA decide to let in two teams from OCEANIA is the day that I will take up alligator wrestling. Mind you, I hear Vanuatu are a pretty good side. And the Marshall Islands. My money would be on Fiji, though! Australia and New Zealand are rubbish in comparison! :smt043

And since we are clearly in the land of fiction, you could at least have had a couple more of the "home" nations making it through aside from England. Scotland have to be better than the Western Sahara and Wales are miles better than Belgium!

The two usually finish top of the Oceania section. Although for 2010 the Aussies will be in the Asian section.

Oceania was far too easy for them. In 2001 they scored 53 goals in 2 games [31:0 v American Samoa and 22:0 v Tonga]. The former is a world record.

That's ridiculous. They're still a part of that continent, no matter how easy it is for them!

I give up trying to understand football.

I'm working on a downloadable spreadsheet so, as well as this, people can fill in their own results and their own plotline. I'm no great shakes at Excel, but it should be ready by tomorrow.

I have found an error in the Excel spreadsheet I used to sort the groups, so I will have to re-start the whole thing. I should have it fixed sometime today, though.
