And they're right on top in this first Test at Lord's after KP's brilliant 202 not out...

What a time for him to get his first three-figure innings in England for three years - and pass 6000 Test runs in the process, too. ;) 8)

Better late than never, I guess...

Well, England did indeed win - but India were still just about in it when Dravid hit a gritty unbeaten 103, before Ishant Sharma reduced Strauss's men to 107-6 in their second innings.

But then, of course, Prior and Broad put on 162, Prior hitting an unbeaten 103 of his own (off precisely 100 balls less than Dravid's) and Broad capping a great all-round performance with an unbeaten 74 (to go with seven wickets in the match).

After that, there was nothing India could do to even force a draw, especially with Anderson also in fine form, Tendulkar unwell, and Zaheer Khan and Gambhir injured. What a shame, though, that what is very likely to be the Little Master's final innings at Lord's consisted of only 12 runs off 68 balls... :(

An exciting first day at Trent Bridge...

England were really on the ropes at 124-8 before Broad's impressive 64.

Can he be considered an all-rounder and not just a bowler? Well, he's hit 169 - the highest score by an England number 9 - as well as seven half-centuries. Then again, that 169 is his only first-class century to date...

Anyway, England's bowlers couldn't possibly have asked for a better start. Abhinav Mukund is, apparently, the 96th player to be dismissed first ball of a Test innings...

How come no one else is posting on here? :?

Especially when day two in Nottingham was even better than day one...

Seriously, I'm quite surprised that I'm the only one talking about this series... :? :?

Anyway, here's my summary of the rest of the second Test.

England looked like they were in big trouble when India reached 267 with only four wickets lost, thanks to Dravid's second century of the series and fifties from Laxman and Yuvraj Singh.

And then... Broad continued his amazing run of form, dismissing Yuvraj and then, of course, skittling Dhoni, Harbhajan and Praveen Kumar with successive deliveries in his next over, finishing with 6-46 and leaving the Indians with a first-innings lead of only 67.

Then England's batsmen turned the screw, and boy, did they turn it tightly. Bell, of course, led the way with his 159, putting on 162 for the third wicket with KP (63) and 104 for the fourth with Morgan (70). He may have got lucky on 137 when Dhoni sportingly decided to withdraw a run-out appeal, but as it turned out, that made little difference.

Prior (73) and Bresnan (90) also chipped in, adding 119 for the seventh wicket and helping England put on a massive 187 runs in the Sunday evening session, while Broad once again showed what he could do with the bat, hitting 44 off 32 balls including two sixes.

They were finally all out for 544, the fourth-highest second-innings total in their history, having scored at a rate of 4.52 per over.

It left India needing 478 to win - but once they slid to 55-6, it really did become a matter of when, and not if, England would triumph. Tendulkar (56), Harbhajan (46) and Kumar (25) merely delayed the inevitable, while Bresnan took 5-48 - including trapping Dhoni lbw for a golden duck - to cap a great all-round performance of his own.

This 319-run defeat leaves India on the brink of losing their status as the world number 1 Test side...

Sorry I've been busy last few days...but I certainly didn't miss the drama!

Stuart Broad has been simply marvellous so far!!! His hat-trick was just quality!

There's no way we're going to lose a 2 Test lead on this form! And as many India fans have already suggested, we're already playing like the world's best Test team!

Great first day at Edgbaston if you're an England fan. ;)

Broad and Bresnan are still on fire - but Tendulkar simply hasn't settled...

Well, after day two in Birmingham, I think we can safely say it's now a question of when, and not if, England will become the top Test side in the world.

Indeed, it's very possible that they'll win this one by an innings - they're just scoring runs for free, assisted by some dismal fielding and untidy bowling by the Indians, who have conceded a whopping 46 extras...

It's almost as if India aren't bothering! They're a shadow of their usual selves! England haven't even been playing outstanding cricket and yet they've been dominating!!!

We could yet have a whitewash!

Well, you can't really say that Cook's 294 wasn't outstanding... ;)

And he's right to reject criticism of his batting style. After all, it's not actually a rule that you have to hit fours and sixes regularly if you want to achieve such a huge score...

Anyway, here are all the other stats from an incredible third day in Brum:

- That 710-7 was England's third-largest Test innings ever, and their largest since 1938.

- It's also their largest Test innings at Edgbaston.

- Cook's individual effort is also the largest at Edgbaston, beating Peter May's 285 not out against the Windies in 1957.

- And it's the sixth-largest by an England player.

- He's also the first England player to score 250+ since Graham Gooch made 333 at Lord's in 1990, also against the Indians.

- And, of course, he scored 70 more than what the entire Indian team managed in their first innings.

- The final extras tally was 63 - talking again of India's first innings, that was just 14 less than Dhoni's score.

- England's first-innings lead of 486 is the fourth-biggest in Test cricket.

- Virender Sehwag's king pair was the 13th in Test cricket- and he's hit two triple hundreds...

While the day belonged to Cook - who now looks set to be on the field for the entire match, another rare feat - it would be wrong to overlook Morgan, who made very few mistakes during his 104, and Bresnan too, with his quick unbeaten 53.

If there was anything bad on the field during the day, it was some crazy decisions by the umpires as regards rain and bad light...

And so, it was at around 3:05pm yesterday that England became the number 1 Test team in the world...

On the basis of what they've achieved these last two years - winning eight of their last nine Test series, including the Ashes home and away - is it conceivable that they could go on from here and become one of the greatest sides ever, up there with the West Indies side of the 1980s and the Australia side of the early 2000s?

And they're emphasising that call even more so; KP and Bell's MASSIVE partnership yesterday was incredible!

Whitewash DEFINITELY on the cards...card another hundred or so runs before declaring today...then clean India up quickly to give plenty of time to get the second innings done in time!

Sure enough, the declaration came as expected...even though the rain was to blame...

But England already tearing through the top order...should hopefully force a follow-on today, or at very least send them back out to bat!

England are deservedly No. 1 and on current form would be expected to beat South Africa although they will be a stiffer challenge. We didn't see the best of the Indians though, and they will be harder to beat in India. Before the start of the series you could have argued that India have the better batting line up, but injuries to Sehwag and Gambir prevented them from showing why they had got to No. 1 in the first place. It seems incredible to think that India won the series when they came here last with a similar bowling line up, but it can't be overstated how much Zaheer Khan was missed. The truth is that England are a team that work hard, are really well lead, well coached, and have intensity and tenacity. It's amazing to think that Stuart Broad was on the verge of being dropped at the end of the Sri Lanka series, but his all round contribution gave him man of the series. Hopefully England will stay No. 1 for a number of years! :)

And is Tendulkar destined never to reach 100 international centuries?!

He was just nine runs away... :(

Yes but he was very lucky to reach 91 in the first place, he was far from comfortable at the crease wasn't he?

Brilliant to see YET ANOTHER innings victory anyway, but as Strauss very quickly pointed out the real work begins when they play South Africa in warmer conditions...it will be very difficult for sure.

But I'm definitely not the only one who thinks this is easily the strongest England squad in many years!

Now on to the one dayers in Ireland...and a big good luck to Morgan who is to captain England! :D

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread to talk about an astonishing Test match between South Africa and Australia in Cape Town - in particular, the second day...

The Aussies started this day 214-8 in their first innings, going on to 284 before being bowled out. Skipper Michael Clarke accounted for more than half that total with 151, but only three other batsmen reached double figures: Shaun Marsh (44), Mitchell Johnson (20) and Peter Siddle (20).

The Proteas reached 49-1 at lunch, with captain Graeme Smith (37) batting well - but after the interval they collapsed to 96 all out, the damage being done by Shane Watson (5-17) and Ryan Harris (4-33).

They were far from down and out, though - proceeding to reduce Australia to 13-3 at tea.

And then... Vernon Philander (making his Test debut) and Morné Morkel went and took out Mike Hussey, Clarke, Brad Haddin, Harris, Johnson and Marsh (batting at 10 due to a back problem) in the space of five overs, to leave the Aussies at 21-9.

At this point, they were still five runs short of the lowest Test score ever - New Zealand's 26 against England in Auckland in March 1955...

Somehow, Siddle (12 not out) and Nathan Lyon (14) managed not only to take them past this total but also past the lowest Aussie Test total (36 against England at Edgbaston in 1902) and even past the 46 that England managed against the Windies in Trinidad in 1994.

Philander and Morkel, though, finished with fantastic figures of 5-15 and 3-9 respectively. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, there were no extras conceded in this innings. 8)

There was still time for Jacques Rudolph to be caught behind - the 23rd wicket of the day   - before South Africa closed on 81-1, chasing 236 to win.

After these unbelievable events, many thought that this Test was very much in the melting pot...

...But the next day produced just one wicket, as Smith (101 not out) and Hashim Amla (112) guided the Proteas home before lunch.
