Well!!!

After a shock win against Portugal, Switzerland actually finished 3rd in the group - Czech Republic were only minutes away from a quarter-final place, and they ended up finishing bottom of the group! :(

Still, it was great to see Middlesbrough forward Sanli Tuncay stick on the Turkish goalkeeper's gloves for the last few minutes of the game!

That's gonna be a mouth-watering tie!

I've just posted the rest of the opening day fixtures for the English Football League in the other thread.

A serious injury, a penalty, a red card, and a goal already in the big game between France and Italy.

And all of the above went against France! They are down to 10 men, Ribery broken his ankle, and now 1-0 down!

Again Buffon proved why he is the world's best goalie!

What a performance from him in the second half!

It finished 2-0; the last time we will ever see Thierry Henry, Claude Makelele and Gregory Coupet wear a Les Blues shirt on the pitch!

Claude Makelele and Lilian Thuram have confirmed their international retirements.

Makelele finished on 71 caps; Thuram, France's most capped player, finishes on a huge 142!

Henry and Coupet are also expected to retire from the international scene as well, especially with increasing rumours that Coupet is actually set to retire from the game completely should he not find a new club in time for the new season.

Corker of a match tonight with Portugal and Germany. I'm going for... Germany to win it!

England don't look quite so bad today as the countries who who beat us in the qualifiers, Croatia and Russia, both reach the last eight.

All the quarter-final matches look like mouth-watering ties, the tournament still looks wide open to me.

I predict Portugal and Germany tonight to go to penalties, and Holland vs Russia to be an absolute cracker with several goals. Despite struggling in the group stage nobody should count out Italy.

PORTUGAL ARE OUT!!!

Short-term love here but I LOVE THE GERMANS - finally the Portuguese know how it feels to trip up at the final 8 stage!

Now it's crunch time for Ronaldo - he needs to put this last month to bed and finally tell United he wants out "officially" so Real can open contract talks with him...

...that is, if he has the balls to!

I honestly think any of these games could go either way. With the exception perhaps of Croatia v Turkey tomorrow, the Turks are the weakest team left and I'd be surprised if they go any further.

I wouldn't be surprised at all though if Russia and/or Italy win their ties. Holland and Spain will be the favourites on paper but as we've seen tonight and 4 years ago anything can happen in these knock out games.

WHAT A BELTER!!!

CROATIA ROBBED!

Turkey are well known for last minute heroics - and they've just sent the match to be decided with a penalty shoot out!

Another big shock tonight - Russia knocked out Holland!

Jeez this tournament is just like the FA Cup! Full of shock results!

If I'm gonna guess one more time who's gonna win, I'll say Germany after their result against Portugal!

So who will join Germany, Turkey and Russia in the semi-finals?

Goalless at the moment between Spain and Italy...Buffon has already had to make a few world-class moves to keep David Villa from scoring!

Italy are out!

Another shock, no offense to Spain but I really thought Italy would win!

Erm..............Spain were playing to win, Italy were playing for penalties, and therefore deserved to lose.

Well that's what I thought from the second half - Buffon was playing for Italy, no one else was!!!

Spain did deserve to win...I just thought pre-match that Italy would start proving their worth as World Champions...apparently not though
