A couple of days ago I decided to have a go at giving up smoking. I'm fed up of smelling like an ash tray and also the expence.

I had 2 yesterday and 3 today, so first i'm cutting down, then stopping.

So has anyone on here tried giving up or gave up, as I need some tips.

So here I go!

How many you smoke a day normally?

My only tip would be cold turkey, but I know it's easier said than done.

My housemate tried to quit smoking, but has been struggling. She bought some nicotine patches and when they ran out, she just started smoking again! My advice would be to go to the Doctors and ask them to prescribe you some patches.

I don't smoke, but good luck with quitting. I sympathise with you! :)

First of all good luck. Proud of ya!

You are tackling a vicious destructive addiction and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves and has my sympathy.

I dont have many additional tips apart from

Dont think of them as ciggies or tabs. Treat them with the contempt they deserve. I call them cancer sticks if anyone can think of a more horrendous name I am sure they will let you know.

Put the money you save into a bank account and use the money to buy yourself something that you want more than a c-stick. Only you know what that will be - but I know someone who used his c-stick money to pay for 2 weeks holiday in 2002.

Trying to write down all the occassions when you currently smoke - what you are doing / how you are feeling especially if you have a pattern of "comfort c-sticks" or "telly c-sticks" or " pub c-sticks". If you find that a pattern emerges, the information could help you especially during the early days when the craving is worse.

The main thing is - one bad day - isnt an excuse to restart hurting yourself. Get down to zero c-sticks per day asap and pat yourself on the back for every day you dont have one.

Get your record up to two days - then three - then a week............. and make a point of letting us know on here. We will support you as best we can.

Gerry

sound advice!

I might pass that on to my housemate.

But basically there's loads of help out there for people to stop smoking, do it now because soon you won't be able to smoke in public places - which will be awful having to stand outside in the Winter!!!

They have already introduced that law up here in Scotland (following on from Ireland) and it is 100% brilliant. Pubs in Inverness are brilliant now that you can breathe!

Indeed! 8)

Anyway just to let you know, I had my last *beep* tonight in the pub. I think it was best to stop at the end of a day. Cos if I had my last one say tomorrow afternoon, i'd want another one.

How's the giving up going Nick? Not meaning to hijack this thread but I gave up smoking today... been thinking about it for ages.... I've been smoking 20 a day and the cost, not to mention the health concerns are just too much!

Found a great website to help so I hope it helps you as well... http://www.givingupsmoking.co.uk/Home/

Anyway, so far so good but I know it's going to get tough but I feel determined to do it this time.... have given up before and lasted about 4 days  but hopefully this is it now!

Hope you're managing to beat the habit Nick :D
