The 31st will be nine years since she died.

I dunno...I was only 8 at the time. I remember Mum telling me the news, but I think I just thought 'Oh'....didn't really understand. When her funeral was shown, I was more upset by the fact that Channel 4 just interrupted the cartoon they were showing mid-flow to show it.

It was a shock and she did do alot of good but there are alot of people out there that do good every day, we have soldiers fighting evil and stuff like that, I dont think she was iconic but she will always have a place in peoples hearts and she was taken much too soon.

I remember turning on the TV early on Saturday morning and it was all over the news. A couple of days later I remember saying to my mum "why didn't they make such a fuss over her when she was alive?" I had barely heard of her to be honest.

I always thought she was the most famous person of all time, even before death.

I thought the amount of fuss people made (and still do) was ridiculous. I don't really care, to be honest. (Well, I do, but only as much as I care about all the other people who have died. She was no better than anyone else.)

I had been on a stag do the night before and remember my mate waking me up to tell me and that our football match had been cancelled out of respect.

I was fuming at being woken early and football being cancelled.

As for Diana - as far as I was concerned I couldn't give a monkey's.

Her and all her family were and are annoying hypocrites but at least they now pay tax :-D

I absolutely adored her, and was devastated to here of her death.

I had a poem published in a commemorative book of poetry for her shortly after she died. I have visited Althorpe twice, and I did see Diana when she came to Barnsley Relate, but didn't get to meet her. She was a great woman ruined by marrying into the most dysfunctional family in the country.

This thread has to be a joke. The woman was the only virgin they could find in the aristocracy to breed Charles with and was right up there with Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham as magazine fodder. The hysteria in the country when she died was quite simply ridiculous and the fact that people can think they adore her is very worrying indeed

The most disgusting thing about the whole charade was making those poor boys walk behind her coffin.

It's not worrying at all. Suicide rates amongst women her age rose 45%, people did adore her. She touched so many people and found a place in the nation's hearts. She wasn't perfect but she was a bloody good human being.

They did this from their own personal choice, actually, the adults tried to talk them out of it, thought it would be too much for them, but they were determined to do it.

Ouch! The use of the word "actually" and an urban myth (that they wanted to) to follow........

I suppose you know that for a fact and can prove it.

Suicide rates rising by 45% is some how used as a measure of the esteem in which Diana was held.

Congratulations - you may have just posted one of the most offensive messages in the history of the internet.

On behalf of all the families, children and friends of the women who killed themselves I salute your complete and utter stupidity.

Please dont assume she found a place in the nation's heart as it might be that the majority of the nation probably could not care less about Diana.

You cannot prove they do and I cannot prove they dont by the way so please dont start babbling on about the media circus that was her funeral. 20,000 cockneys and tourists watching a free show during the summer holidays does not equate to a nation's heart being touched!

Gosh what a rude and offensive person you are.

I am not up there with the Diana loving either but I dont think you should be knocking those that worshipped her.

As for the boys I think they would have been able to make up their own minds as to what they wanted to do.

I would rather mourn the death of true heroes or my own family members but everyone has the right to mourn whoever they wish.

You know I went back to the original thread (and I have no idea why it was posted!) and I think that describing her death as the most shocking thing ever is so sad. It is beyond sad. It is where sad ends and scary begins with a vengance.

Just to put the sad death of Diana into some sort of perspective........

New York September 11th
London July 7th
The discovery of Austwitz
AIDS
The Ethiopan Famine
The Orphanages in Romania
The Battle of the Somme

I could add quite a few more but I think that the point has been well made. It wasnt the most shocking thing ever if you can be bothered to read a history book....it was just sad. Sad that it happened, sad that our nation over reacted, sad that folk are still making money from her memory.

Who made Diana an icon?

The same newspapers and magazines that are currently convincing folk that Chantelle, Jade Goody, Paris Hilton, Victoria Beckham, Kerry Whatshername and Kate Moss are icons.

The really sad thing is the fact is that some of you are still buying those trashy weekly collections of photos and gossip and feeding the same scum that photographed her dying in that tunnel in Paris.
