ITV's newest game show hits the screens on Saturday 21st Feb at 6:35pm and is hosted by Chris Tarrant. It's being billed as 'the most stressful game on TV'.

ITV wrote:
The most stressful game on TV has arrived

Chris Tarrant hosts a brand new prime-time game show on ITV1 featuring specially designed cash machines which can deliver huge sums of money - but only if contestants can keep their nerve.

Life-changing amounts of cash are at stake for each contender in this unique high-pressure game of skill and strategy.

Twenty multi-coloured cash machines are all pre-programmed to issue a set maximum amount of money between £1000 and £20,000, with no two machines containing the same amount. As the seconds ticks by, the figure displayed increases by £1000 - but remember a second is a long time on The Colour of Money.

The longer you hold your nerve, the greater the amount available to withdraw. But get too greedy and the machine is locked down, and you get nothing.

Each player has ten chances to withdraw enough money to take them to their target - but play the game carelessly and they'll walk away empty handed.

Chris Tarrant is joined by glamorous side-kick Millie Clode, who will be on hand in the studio to help the contestants with facts and figures which will aid them in playing the nerve racking cash machines.

Also, if you like, you can try out the online version of the game here >> http://www.itv.com/Games/Gameshows/TheC ... fault.html << where I have tried, and failed, twice to reach my targets of £65,000 & £75,000.

It's a simple enough concept - pick a cash machine and say when to stop, but will the show be a hit or a miss?

The money you can win on the show is potentially big - ranging between £55,000 & £155,000 - but the higher your target means the odds are stacked against you. Whereas a target of around £60,000 is at least more achievable (though not by me on the online game it isn't  ). Go too high and you get nothing. So I can why it will be tense.

I'm not sure if you can choose your own target to reach on the show, but in the online game you have to pick one of three cards that have a predetermined target on them. So I presume that's how it'll work in the actual show.

I'll certainly watch the first episode to see what it's like, so i'll hold out till then before I judge it.

If anyone listens to commercial radio, then the "Chicken" competition they sometimes do, runs exactly like this - for the interest of anyone who didn't tune in, they had a recording play for a lucky caller, which consisted of random, but accumulating sums of money being read out, at different lengths of time inbetween each amount, obviously for tension sake. After a while you'd think enough is enough, you'd shout STOP! And then that money is yours...but you'd then have to listen on to hear how much more you could have won, if any...either way, whether you'd have stopped or not, if you heard the word CHICKEN! it meant you was too greedy and you'd have won nothing. Some good wins were made from this naturally, but many many greedy people also suffered!

I'm really looking forward to this!

At last I reached one of my targets on the online game and have made it on to the leaderboard >> http://colour.itv.com/leaderboard.php << I'm currently in 3rd place...out of 13 so far.

It is quite tense knowing when to stop or to risk the money rising just a little more to try and get your target. I'm glad i'm not playing it for real.

Regardless of the format, the set (pictures somewhere on the Bar) looks AMAZING!

Looks interesting. I suppose it will replace GoldenBalls for a while.
It's just a damn shame that this game hates foriegners. :x

That game is bloody awesome. I just won £55,000 on my second try.

The benchmarks are £55k and £155k evidently because £1k-£10k inclusive all add up to £55k and then £11k-£20k inclusively all add up to £155k. Now I don't know if the 3-card format will be used in the show bo've heard that the contestant decides their own target to reach... :ponder:

This would work much better if the values had a non-linear pattern. As it is, the risks for a higher reward are ridiculous - any sensible player will chase the lowest target for a very easily attained life-changing £55k.

Still, the basic game is one that ticks the DoND boxes - tension, appearance of simplicity, surprisingly deep underlying mathematical game - better than any show since. Not convinced it quite works, but rather more convinced it could be made to...

I'm not sure if it's the case on TV, but on the online game the player picks a target at random.

Here's an interview with Chris Tarrant about the show.

Digital Spy wrote:
What are the rules of The Colour Of Money?
"Basically you get 20 massive cash machines, each with significant amounts of money inside, ranging from £1,000 to £20,000 - there must be about £250,000 altogether. You then swipe a card and a big sum of money comes up, which tends to be around £80,000. It's not Millionaire money, but it's very serious stuff. You then go through picking ten machines trying to get your total up to £80,000. It's like the Bong Game because if you get too greedy the machine will blow up and you don't get any money from that machine."

It sounds like it could be quite a tense show to watch.
"Of all the things I've done, it's the most emotionally draining. All these hard-faced cynical people who work in the show's production were in floods of tears, crying 'ooh, that poor woman!' You leave the set feeling completely battered. I've never seen so many people crying on a show. The place was awash. The machine just starts going, '£1,000... £2,000.... £3,000', meanwhile the audience are screaming, 'for God's sake stop!' The families are on the sides shouting 'what are you doing? You silly cow!' In terms of sheer drama, it's incredible."

Do you think it can get anywhere close to the success of Millionaire?
"I've seen an edit of the first two shows and I think it's very good. I am cautious because it's a new venture and you can never be sure with TV work that what happens in the studio will be communicated. Whether the tension gets through to people at home, we'll have to wait and see. The thing it does have in common with Millionaire is the 'shoutability' factor, where people will be sat screaming at their screens."

Do you struggle to keep you mouth shut when you think someone's about to get greedy and blow it?
"My job is not to show emotion. I'm actually quite an emotional guy, but the times I've sat on Millionaire and been thinking, 'For God's sake!' I'm just like everyone else at home. I'm saying to myself, 'A lifeline! A bloody lifeline on this!' On Colour Of Money, I do show a bit more emotion because there's lots of times where I can't even bare to look."

Do you think Millionaire has an end point any time soon?
"There has to be an end point. There must be. I never imagined in 1998 that I'd still be doing it in 2010! I've always said that I'll only stop when I don't enjoy it, but I've just been in the studio all week doing it and it was honestly a complete ball. The mixture of people who come and sit next to me, eyeball to eyeball, who can win this astounding amount of money, is incredible. Everyone knows Millionaire these days and it fits like a glove. It's such a fantastic, simple format."
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a145948/ ... money.html

"You then swipe a card and a big sum of money comes up, which tends to be around £80,000."

So you don't actually get to choose your own target in the show. I think we'll be seeing a lot of people going home with £0 on this. Especially if they get a massive target, like £100,000, to reach.

This is an intriguing format from what I've seen so far... it's got elements of The Weakest Link with the "banking" stuff; elements of DOND with the random choosing of the colours and the "finding out what would've happened if you hadn't stopped" element; and the set reminds me of that of the X Factor, with the person's name and/or the colour they've chosen scrolling across screens at the top of the set...

Also the introduction with the VT and the emotional story reminded me of the start of the DOND "Christmas Star" shows...

I am loving it so far! The set is a lot bigger then thought it would be. I pictured a DOND sized set not one riveling Strike it Rich!! One thing that is getting on my nerves is that woman Millie. She needs to say stuff like a lot of the low amounts have gone and there is massive money there! Sounds like another game show...

Some of the colours even have stigmas attached to them - the red colour has a similar reputation that boxes 22 and 13 have.

Is it made by Endemol? You could also have a system for picking them. Stuff like foods, shades of blue or the rainbow. I am liking it a lot!

Interesting format, not sure if it's a prime time Saturday ratings winner though, could perhaps see it more as a lower stakes version in a teatime DOND/Goldenballs type slot.

As I've heard said elsewhere it borrows heavily from the "Bong Game" used on the radio and in the second incarnation of The People Versus...
