It had to happen, and tonight it does: ITV have bought their news back to 10pm, Monday-Thursday.

Apparently they're doing it 'properly' too, with many elements of the old News at Ten being used - the introduction is a remake of one used in the late 1980s, 'and finally' is back, and even Trevor McDonald is back from retirement (from news, anyway) to host with former Sky News presenter Julie Etchingham. Another new arrangement of the News at Ten theme will be used too - by my count, the fourth new arrangement since all the news bulletins adopted the News at Ten theme in the mid-90s.

Are you going to be watching? I think I will just to see if it's at all tolerable - fact is, ITV News has become very much worse since News at Ten was abandoned in 1999.

No.

With on-demand news available on the Internet 24-7 I haven't viewed a news broadcast for many years. And certainly not ITV news. Last time I watched it had dumbed down so much that Newsround gave more depth and detail on pertinent issues of the day.

You've probably nailed the reasons for the decline of ITV's news.

See also, this excellent spoof (YouTube link).

OK, brief analysis:

Titles - very, very good. Much sharper than the equivalent used 20 years ago or thereabouts, and I presume these are HD-ready too?
Music - oh dear. ITV have used five arrangements of that now if memory serves, and that's the worst yet.
Studio - shiny, and at least they have seats.
Graphics - OTT at the bongs, otherwise I think I like them.
Journalism - OK, they lead on a Diana-related story. Oh, dear, no.

In short, about what I expected from ITV.

I find the whole ITN news style to be unbearably OTT and "tabloidy". I started watching the six-thirty news yesterday evening and switched over very quickly- they led on the Diana inquest, which was bad enough, but the way Mark Austin introduced it- you'd think a nuclear bomb had just dropped on London, not that they were reporting an item that surely is only of interest to the dwindling band of monarchists and Daily Express readers in this country. My view on Diana is- she's dead, get over it, let her rest in peace, give her family a break, and move on. I've found the amount of reporting on this subject totally out of proportion.

ITV news reminds me of "The Day Today", the brilliant Chris Morris spoof of news that was shown on Channel4 a few years ago. At the time, the programme seemed amazingly over the top in it's satire of TV news- now ITN delivers much the same every night.

Added to that the fact that I find Trevor McDonald insufferably pompous and self-important- all he does is sit in a studio and read an auto-cue, for God's sake- and I for one will not be watching ITV news until they have a major rethink.

Well obviously they're keen to make sure we all watch News at Ten... a News at Ten "bong" just went off during The Palace - must've been a mistake unless Big Ben has moved to Buckingham Palace!
