Anybody watch Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall's Chicken Run over the last 3 nights?

Well done to him for these programs, less well done to most of the supermarkets who wouldn't even speak to him.

We've become so conditioned to accepting chicken as a cheap everyday meal, that when we see them at £5 for 2, we don't even stop to think about how they're produced so cheaply, and hopefully Hugh will have made a few more people think about that.

I remember when a roast chicken was something really special. At my local Waitrose today- not even the cheapest of supermarkets- a really good, free range organic chicken was £7. You can guarantee it will taste a heck of a lot better than the cheapo intensively reared variety- and you can probably get 2 or 3 meals out of it. Is that really so expensive?

If you want to sign up to Hugh's campaign, just Google "chicken out" and it will take you to the site.

This is the kind of TV that really makes you think.

I've only seen a few bits of the show but I think that it's certainly a subject that should be discussed more and that it's good that C4 are bringing this to the public eye.

Will it make much difference though? That depends on us who buys the chicken and also the supermarkets and how much their willing to change. I read that a farmer gets only 2-3p per chicken which is totally wrong.

I actually bought a free range organic chicken from Waitrose at Christmas and it did actaully taste better and seemed more juicy, and a week later I had a a 'normal' cheap chicken and it didn't taste as good and overall was not as tasty as the organic one.

However there was about a £4 price difference between the two (and the organic chicken had a special offer at the time) and whilst to some people that might not seem a lot of money to people who don't have much money for whatever reason that is a big difference.

Also Jamie Oliver has a show on tonight at 9PM on C4 which will show some of the methods of how these chickens are reared and killed.
