I don't care how they will enjoy the money I care for having a game to entertain me
That sums up my feelings as well. It sounds harsh but that's the point in a TV show, I keep saying it but a TV show isn't made primarily to fulfill people's personal needs but it is made to entertain an audience of over 1,000,000 people.
And seeing someone gamble their way to a disastrous outcome - which isn't an inevitable consequence of every gamble of course, but is always a possibility - isn't terribly enjoyable for many people to watch. Although I suppose the 'buzzkill', as the Americans might put it, comes at the end of the show, rather than at the deal point (which isn't the buzzkill moment for me, but I concede it is for many people).
I'll concede right away that I'm at least mildly uncomfortable with gambling on some level. I have a natural aversion to risk, and DoND is actually where I am at my
least risk-averse because the game exists in a mathematical bubble where there is a great deal of certainty about the possible outcomes and it is reasonable to make certain assumptions (such as a general rise in generosity through the game). The vast majority aren't like that - or are they? The older demographic - perhaps the most important for DoND - tend to be much cooler in their attitudes towards gambling than the younger generation that is disproportionately represented on here (although there is a significant group of university students, myself included, that perhaps flips that round).
The younger viewers may be finding DoND no longer exciting, and flick to doing whatever else with those 45 minutes per day. The older viewers may be angry at the show's emphasis on gambling (don't forget, at least one of the main newspapers read by this demographic, the Mail, has run a vigorous campaign against casino expansion, and there's similar concern about gambling regularly expressed in the Express and Telegraph) and flick to... probably The Royal Today now, it was Heartbeat or period drama repeats before. (Very smart scheduling by ITV1, and it soaked up a lot of viewers from DoND. I think the genesis is, indeed, disillusionment with DoND.)
Although I've no doubt this is an overgeneralisation, and that at most I'm describing a majority of the transfer in each case. Heck, I'm a younger viewer and effectively stopped watching on the grounds of its gambling emphasis - though NOT to watch ITV1!!
