Shaun's game today.

Noel talks about how Sue yesterday nearly became the 13th member of the 1p club and the banker is upset as Sue nearly played on.

Shaun has box 2.

He is a fire station officer from the West Midlands, and he is involved in the training of fire fighters, but he tells how not many people actually successfully get through the training... he also says it's a good job because people look up to you and women like the uniform :P He says he loves fire as it's mystical and magical

His daughter and ex-wife, who is now his friend, is in the audience. He shows some pics of how he has helped children in third world countries.

Here we go...

Ah now you see you get some people who say certain contestants are inspirational for not really doing something but having something impaired, Shaun is inspirational 16 years as a firefighter and helping kids in other countries. Hope he does well!

His system is based on his first 22 fights as an amateur boxer. He is starting with his worst fights first.

7 - Richie - £5,000

14 - newbie Martin - £10,000

5 - Angie - £250

13 - Audrey - £100,000

Audrey says she'll miss Shaun's singing on the coach every morning

16 - Ben - £3,000

Time for the banker...

This is going to be an entertaining show no matter what the outcome. :D

Great to have a firefighter on the show. Especially one that loves fire. haha

Noel jokes about how the banker was beaten in front of his ex-wife Dorris!! Noel says the banker is imagining how Shaun would talk about the mystical properties of fire instead of tackling it, and he's likely to have started it half an hour previously!!

Indeed, Sylvia was the last one to have a power 5 box on the table, and that was 250k, though that was filmed after these shows, so the last power 5 box for them would have been Orry's game.

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 17:59
oh well, i had hoped it had not come to the table two days in a row, well his first game he had the 250,000 and now finishes with the 1p.

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 18:01
LOL!!! we have the 13th member woo.

In all seriousness though that final offer was disgusting it was a blatent force on no deal.

Remember Chantelle?, She was offered 12k on that final two and she no dealed but ultimatly got the 35k.

7k was derisory he totally did the right thing no dealing and he took the 1p like a man!!.

Bad luck Shaun but you played it the best you could and did the right thing at the end.

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 18:07
...yyyyyouch.

...who said about second chance games elsewhere in the forum???

After the fourth-round knockdown, he utterly dominated the sixth, but that wasn't just losing on the judges' scorecards, that was the judges themselves delivering a low blow each!!!

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 18:08
What a disappointing finish but Shaun could not be faulted for the way he played it in my opinion. It was his one big chance and I like the way he kept going when the £250k was still up on the board. After it had gone a run of reds turned it into a one box game and the £7k offer at 2 box was an insult. I guessed he'd go for it and its a pity that sometimes luck doesn't favor the brave.

I'd rather win 1p with honour than £7k as a coward so as far as I'm concerned its a 1p win with respect and esteem intact.

Other than that an entertaining player and an enjoyable show with great tension at the end.

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 18:17
I liked Shaun and the last part of the game provided some great tension. With the banker ringing with the final offer at 4:51, I was sure something unusual would happen, or at least a £35k win with a minute of celebrating... so I was very surprised when 1p was opened! And 2 days in a row on the table... ouch. Has the £250k ever been on the table 2 days in a row? I know other amounts such as £20k have...

The offers at the end of Shaun's game were rather low and he can't be at all blamed for no dealing - after the extra-high offers at the start, that was quite a spectacular crash!

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 18:24
Caught the last 5 minutes of this... I was like, he no dealt on THAT?! But reading through here it would perhaps be more surprising if he'd dealt! I do feel gutted for him, although at the end he probably thought he'd end up either with the money or the 1p prestige, so maybe he saw it as a win-win situation!

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 18:42
What a crash!

That board was looking mighty fine with that £17,500 offer. If anyone No Dealed it (many here would, I'm sure - even me!), you would have won 1p today. And I unfortunately would have because it was box 2 on the table.

Disappointing result, but as everyone has already commented, he took it well!

(BTW I had to change my TV settings to widescreen to see him, but I did see Taff next to Shaun's F&F!!!)

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 19:16
Ouch, Shaun didnt deserve that.

Full marks to Shaun for no-dealing the final offer - a one in a lifetime chance to have a 50/50 gamble where you stand to gain four times as much as you stand to lose. OK, it didnt work out, but he did the right thing. Maybe you could argue he should have taken one of the earlier high offers, but I think Shaun played in a creditable manner throughout, and he took the result extremely well, much better than a lot of players who have walked away with more money.

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 19:20
And now there are 13 in the 1p club, getting a bit crowded for that caravan?

The club will have to move in an apartment soon :P

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 19:26
Probably the most amazing DOND statistic of all;

1p winners - 13
£250K winners - 1

You have to admit that The Banker is incredibly succesful. It cant just be luck, the law of averages says those two boxes should come to the table as often as each other.

Posted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 20:16
Oh dear, I end up really liking everyone who wins 1p! :(

That was really entertaining and the Shaun was the funniest contestant since Clive. I loved all the girls introducing the rounds as wekk - but when Norman got to do it in karen's game in August, that was even funnier! :)

It actually reminded me of several other 1p games where at the last 5, there's 1 red and loads of other low blues (like Dave E, Connell, Sharron, Adam, Tony, Fadil - even Trevor) - and it felt like 7k was a terrible offer given the round he'd just had, but I suppose 20% of the red on a 1p/red last pair is nothing new.

While i disagree with the comment that it's better to win 1p with honour than 7k being cowardly - I'd rather have 7k than 1p no matter how it's acheieved - but I guess going home with 1p having turned down 7k would, to me, not be as bad as taking 7k and finding out I could have had 35k. Probably 10k and there's more of a decision to make.

Actually it is staggering that there have been NO power 5 boxes at the table this year - the exact opposite of last year, when one was coming every other game! :)

Well doen Shaun on being such a great contestant, shame you didn't win more!!

Gutted for a real nice guy but couldn't understand why as he had wanted to get shot of box 2 earlier in the game why did he not take the swap.

I liked today's show with Shaun (apart from the win) and the whole boxing theme they had going on.

The game started off a bit shaky with Shaun knocking out 4 reds in the first round, but he seemed to be making a good come-back and managed to get an offer of £17,500. However soon after the no deal Shaun started punching out the high reds and to get to 5-box with 4 of the Banker's power 5 still in play meant Shaun was always going to have a fight on his hand to get a good result. In the end it came down to a nail-biting finish. Would Shaun smack the Banker where it hurts, his wallet, and get the victory or would the Banker indeed get the last laugh. Unfortuently for Shaun the Banker indeed won the match with the 1p being on the table for its second day in a row and provided us with the second 1p winner this month.

The final of £7,000, whilst not spectacular, could of been a get-out for some people too scared to risk going into the 1p club. Perhaps if the Banker had offered over £10,000 maybe Shaun would of dealt. But as the Banker pointed out, just because the 1p was here yesterday doesn't mean it won't be here again.

Bad luck Shaun but at least you've got 12 other people in that club to keep you company :)

Great game, great contestant and an unfortunate ending. Today's show shows how overinflated Nikki's offer was earlier this week. Even considering that the 1p was in place of a high blue, the 1p stigma wasn't worth the £9K less offer today.

I don't like all this "could the 1p come to the table 2 days running" nonsense. You might as well say (as an example), the 1p came to the table 1 year ago today (or a week ago or a month ago or 3 weeks ago last Wednesay), couldn't it be spooky if it was on the table today" but only the first of these examples is ever said but every other example is just as likely.

Hey, I saw myself about 10 times! Don't think we saw too much of Shaun on the wings (was that because of his accent?) but he was a great guy and really popular with the other contestants. Everyone in the studio was gutted when the 1p was revealed, but he took it so well. Will have to book for another show, and bring a coachload down from Sheffield with me!

What an exciting game!!! Because there was loads of time left at the final offer, I was absolutely convinced that he'd win the £35k! I hate it when a player rightly no deals a rubbish offer and ends up with a blue. At least he won the penny though. If you're going to win a blue, that's the one you want!

Hello Pat. Thanks for your swift response. Thanks also for your offer of a one-way ticket to Thailand for me. While we're on the subject, would it be possible for you to purchase a one-way ticket to the Moon for Tony Blair? I'd buy it myself but I'd be criticised in the Daily Mail.

[quote="Gordon Brown"]Hello Pat. Thanks for your swift response. Thanks also for your offer of a one-way ticket to Thailand for me. While we're on the subject, would it be possible for you to purchase a one-way ticket to the Moon for Tony Blair? I'd buy it myself but I'd be criticised in the Daily Mail.

Thanks,
i would if i could and tuck that old cracked t-pot made in scotland under his arm.hope you do a better job in Thailand.Come back Maggie all is forgiven.

Wow. I was not expecting that and Shaun didn't deserve that.

A thoroughly entertaining game though.

Well i think we can say that was Noels fault, "whats the chances of the 1p coming to the table again" answer is the same. If people knew how probability worked, that may not have happened

Now now don,t knock our accents in this neck of the woods taff a lot of us have brains and very good jobs, were not all t-pots here you know.i was so sad about shauns game we all love him so much, still another one bites the dust my friend.i saw a lot of you tonight Taff you looked good, better still if you get behind the boxes.

Sorry Pat, the accent is wonderful but not too easy to understand at times! I remember years ago being at a football match at Wolverhampton in the good old days when opposing fans were able to mix with each other, and being surrounded by people with thick Black Country accents. Couldn't understand half of what they were saying - but lovely people!
Would love to get behind the boxes one day (loads of people say I should apply) but it's finding the time ...................................

Go for it, it is the experience of a life time, and think of all the new friends you would make and Noel makes you so at ease and thrives on the banter

I hated all that boxing chat it made me scream. I am dreading the lines that they all use for the contestant who is a funeral director. If only people didn't say what there jobs are, the show could be over in half the time. Bout, ring, knock out Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
