Katie's game today.

Noel says the banker was so in awe of Clive that the banker offered Clive Noel's job but Clive had to go back to the farm as vandals painted "EDMONDS IS BEST" over his cow shed and Noel has a pot of paint - it looks like he did it! :P

Katie has box 8.

She is from Norfolk and works in job recruitment. Noel asks how he'd go about getting a job, and she explains to him how he'd do it. Katie said a bad habit of hers is being late and clumsy. She shows pics of her parents and her friends and roommates. Her friend Lizzie in the audience says Katie is clumsy but lovely. Katie said she placed a cosmic order on the internet, and being on DOND was one of them, the other order was to find Mr. Right...

Here we go...

I have just noticed someone seems to be doing sign language to the person in E1...

Katie answers the phone and Noel says that's not how it's done :P

He answers it with an exaggerated "Hiii" :P

Noel puts on a silly voice and says he wants an offer...

The banker thinks Katie has found Mr. Right and Mark E is "hot but taken" according to Katie :P Apparently he's a nice gentleman but after drinking, Katie is NOT a lady!! :P

19 - Mark E - £1

Katie says Mark is hot and Noel tells her to watch it as it's an afternoon show :P

Katie whispers to Noel and asks if there's a break now, and Noel says it's normally after the second box of the second round and says it's normally a surprise :P

3 - Geoff - £3,000

Katie asks for a cup of tea :P She doesn't know what box to choose and she keeps talking about the break which upsets him as the break's not a surprise to us :P He says "See you after the break" in a glum tone...

1 - newbie Mark B and his communicator Barbara - £250

Mark says he'd like to confirm Noel's name is Noel :P He says all people have sign names and Mark demonstrates what Noel's is :P It is a sort of U sign... Mark asks Noel why it's that and he says because of Noel's shoes, which are turned up like elf's shoes!

The other box - box 20 - Laura - £10

Noel says he knows Katie is disappointed and she says everyone says it's true but she means it - that she is so glad she came. Noel says she made the most of the opportunity she was given, and she should wear a badge saying that as a lot of people have dealt too soon...

Well done on a great game Katie!

Wow what a horrible game....at the fourth offer it was looking like it would be a massive win but it just took one crap offer (£23.5k was even worse than the £26k I was expecting) and she ended up winning 1p. :? There aren't many games where I'd win a blue after turning down £20k+ but that was one of them...I'd be *beep* gutted...

Posted: Sat Jan 05, 2008 17:49
That reminded me of Olly's game - a great opening few rounds, then a quick crash, before recovering and crashing again at the last box...

Bad luck on the 1p Katie, but at least it wasn't the tenner. :(

Katie turned down £23,500 before winning 1p, beating Adam turned down £20,000 to win the same amount.

I've really got to stop watching this show when I should be doing college work...

Feel really bad for Katie, up to the second break the last thing anyone was expecting was for her to end up in the 1p club!

Nothing really wrong with how she played - she took a chance, unfortunately it wasn't the ideal day for her to be picked! :(

Posted: Sat Jan 05, 2008 17:53
Well...all through that i kept looking at the clock and thinking shes going to win a massive sum of money! Then at the last 3 boxes i was sure she was going to win £50,000 but sadly not! I really wanted Katie to win a massive sum of money! Sorry Katie it wasnt alot more!

After Sharron and Sally, yup.

That was a great show and I liked Katie a lot, despite her being relatively quiet on the wings. It started off so well and she got some healthy offers in monetary terms, but I was expecting the fourth offer to be more than what it was. Her no deals were entirely justifiable, and I'd have gone on too.

Interestingly, the show on 5th January 2006 had a 10p vs £100 final two with 10p in the box, the show on 5th January 2007 had a 10p vs £100 final two with £100 in the box... and the show on 5th January 2008 has a 1p vs £10 final two with 1p in the box!

Anyway, well done to katie for taking it well and even cheering at the end when the 1p was revealed - but this show just shows how a game in DOND can fall apart even from a stable board like Katie's! Taking out £250k and £100k in 2 boxes is horrible... :(

Urgh that reminds me, Noel pissed me off at the end going on about how she "made the most of the opportunity"...how exactly is winning 1p making the most of anything whatsoever? I'd say she made the absolute least of the opportunity...

The biggest crash in the history of Deal or No Deal that wasn't self-inflicted. Ugly ugly ugly.

Still, if it brings a dose of reality to 'Laura Day', it's worth it I suppose... well-timed, if this had to happen... but I wish it didn't have to happen.

And judging from Noel's endgame speech, it won't make a difference.

The current Laura to be given a shock game tomorrow for the shortest run of all time excluding the first five?

Thanks to C4 p*ss*ng about with the programme's time I only caught the show after the 2nd break (and that was by luck on C4+1). When I switched on Katie was in a cracking position with a great board. The offer was £23,500 and she did exactly the right thing in no-dealing it I thought. What could go wrong?

Well the crash was breathtaking in its magnitude and the only good that can be salvaged from the ashes of the game was Katie's attitude to such a numbing collapse. She was brave to the end and took it well all things considered.

The wingers are going to have this catastrophe etched on their minds for a while and the ramifications of this could be a run of cautious deals. Its hard enough under normal circumstances to get anybody to take a moderate risk but with luck like that its going to take an exceptionally brave person to go for the £250k when its up for grabs.

Well - I completely forgot about it too, was actually asleep when it was on! In actual fact, I'm quite glad I did given what happened here. Katie would have been one of my favourites after Clive left too.

At least it sounds like she wasn't too upset about it (or at least managed to put a brave face on it until filming ended), which is good. £23,500 sounds like a pretty poor offer for the board she had too, and I'd have had no hesitation in playing on, and the chances are you'd get soemthing close to that offered at 5-box even after a poorish round. And after a crash like that, I guess you want to win the penny rather than the other blue, £10 would have just been REALLY cruel, as 50p would for Sally (but nobody seemed to realise that 50p had never been won then).

And it's not as though the board was really dangerous either like it was for Adam!

Actually the closest game I can think to this was £22,500 Penny - except she dealt when I thought she shouldn't, and then completely butchered the board and was SO relieved she hadn't played on - Katie's sounds like that game but having no-dealt.

I don't think I'll criticise ANYONE for taking a deal for 20-odd grand even on a great board after this!! :)

Posted: Sat Jan 05, 2008 20:09
What a disaster, Katie seemed really nice and certainly didn't deserve to be going home with just 1p after having such a strong board for so long.

Hope that she finds Mr Right - what a lucky guy that will be!

At least she'll be remembered in months to come for joining the 1p Club.

I got back too late to watch the show but followed it on here round by round. I'm glad I missed it as I'd have been gutted for Katie. It seems sad that someone who had the right board for most of the game, and the courage to win the 250K ended up with a penny. :(

Mainly trying to put a positive spin on it, that's all he can do like in Mario's game.

About the game -23.5K wasn't enough - it was about 15K less than what it should have been.

4K wasn't enough as a get out either so i'd plough on to £1.99.

When the 250K is still in play towards the end it makes it more risky to keep going because the offers are higher so there is more to lose so only one contestant has gone all the way the 20 times that 250K has come to the table. With 1p in the contestant's box it means that the offers are more likely to be lower consequently forcing the contestant on to get meaningful money. Also the 1p has come to the table many more times than the 250K, 27 times currently. That said, statistically you would have expected to have slightly less 1p winners and slightly more 250K winners by now. Hopefully the balance will shift this year!

I'm trying to think of possible worse outcomes than this game - all I could come up with were, none of which have happened:

Someone selling the £250,000 for 4-figures (as could have happened on a board like the most recent James')

Someone swapping away the £250,000

Someone no-dealing, say, 50k on a 250k/blue last pair and winning the blue (a slight exaggeration of Orry's game).

Amyone think of any others?

Posted: Sat Jan 05, 2008 23:29
Noel basically said that people that deal at 3rd, 4th or 5th offers aren't there to make the most of their game. What a *beep* stupid thing to say!! People still have fun, it's just that they can't risk the money. Surely making the most is either winning loads of money or having fun?Right?

Posted: Sat Jan 05, 2008 23:32
someone swapping £250,000 away to win 1p...

Someone swapping away the £250,000 mid-game, revealing it the next box and then swapping to 1p.

The IA puts you in a trance so you hit £250,000 down to a penny in order.

That was awful today to go from 23K down to 1p! But she was totally right to no deal at 8 box the offer was stupidly low and she wanted to grab the moment! Just unfortunate it ended like this. Bad luck Katie.

Message to H -- dunno if you missed the start of the show too, but the gals in the photo weren't Katie's family, they were her college pals & current roommates, one of whom was Lizzie in the audience.

Katie's been my favourite player of the last few weeks since she joined the show, and I was hoping for her to win as much as those other irresistible East Anglian ladies, Kascey & Power Cut Kerry...

But, given the choice of those final three amounts in the game, in a funny kinda way I'm glad Katie won the most memorable one, and she's now immortalised in the annals of DOND!

Most people can't help but use hindsight in this game. Half the time, the dealers will see a game collapse when a player turns down a large sum. Half the time, the no-dealers see a player deal at a decent sum, only for them to keep all the big reds. And they all say "I told you so..."

I hope so too. I do wonder sometimes if there wasn't such a huge monetary gap between the 250k and the next box down, people would be more inclined to take risks... :?

It was a rubbish offer she deserved a much better offer than that and she knew it, so she went on.

Isn't hindsight wonderful cookie?

Er... You said it was a good decision when it wasn't.

Well it was a good decision, given the state of the board and the offer. It just turned out not to be the right one.

Dealing for £1 on a 1p/£250k final two would have a 50% chance of being the right decision, but I don't think anyone would say it was a good one...

It was a low offer for the strong board and it was hard to envisage a 19.5K drop. I would pin my hopes on some sort of 10-15K get out even after taking out 1/2 big numbers.

If the offer had been 15K more it would have been a decent offer.

Well after Clive's game on Friday it was always going to be an interesting show to follow. But the show was still good fun and certainly memorable for creating our 12th 1p member :(

Katie was a good player and I enjoyed the game and even thought we might get a big win today but it wasn't to be. So bad luck Katie on your 1p win but at least you have 11 other people keep you company in the club :)

Wow, definitely did not expect that.

I can't praise Katie enough though, she was brilliant. I don't care that she won 1p, she played the game amazingly but the boxes didn't go the way she wanted.

Well done Katie!!

When she was offered £23,500, I misheard and thought it was £33,500. The banker really forced her to go on at that offer. There was still a long time to go when part 3 started, so I had a feeling something big was going to happen. I was hoping that it was going to be a no deal on a blue/power 5 ending, not a 1p win!

It could of course have been both - which would have triggered an interesting reaction here!!

What an unlucky game. This is a game that I do not expect will turn out REALLY bad!!! :(

I think it's high time that everyone that won 1p was brought back to have a second chance at winning some money. They could call it the Tournament of Losers or something. The player who wins the most money in the tournament would also win a special bonus prize, like a holiday or something.

I think that's a nice idea- the only problem is, people who may have only won £5 or £10 haven't won a meaningful amount either. Should they also be given a second chance? As Noel says, you only sit in the crazy chair once and I think all the contestants must be prepared for the fact that they might not win much, or they might win a lot.

It's pretty upsetting when a lovely young lady like Katie goes away with 1p, and I'm sure we all feel she deserved more, but that's the way the game is.
