The only similar scenario I can think of is on Millioniare. If you were in the chair on £125,000, and had taken a 50/50 but had no idea on the right answer, would you gamble £93,000 to win £125,000 - because very few people have done that.

Very good point. Though having said that, how many people have BEEN in that position?

The last time it happened (as far as I'm aware...) was on the same night as the first primetime DoND, March 4 2006. The gamble didn't pay off, meaning that - hilariously - the first primetime DoND gave away more than that night's Millionaire.

That particular scenario is essentially a £125,000 final offer on £35,000/£250,000, except that the gamble paying off on Millionaire provides an outside shot at £500,000 and the million (and the cost of losing is three grand worse, but that's insigificant in the context). I'm absolutely certain I'd refuse to gamble in each case. (Though I'd have no hesitation gambling with a 50/50 if I was on £64,000 going for £125,000, risking £32,000 to gain £61,000...)

Grrrrrrrrrrrr. I missed this game. How dare Endemol and Channel 4 even think about putting such an amazing show on at a time when I might be out of the house?!?

Seriously though, it sounds like an amazing game. Absolutely delighted for Claudine, she was a great character on the wings and even though she 'technically' didn't beat the banker, to become the second highest winner ever is outstanding!

Now... I wonder if Ilovedealornodeal has uploaded the last 10 mins on to Youtube yet?

I know of one famous person who gambled a 50/50 on £125,000 and lost. The question was something to do with the name of Amy Johnson's plane and he thought it was Pegasus because of the flying connection.

Duncan Bickley would be the man you're thinking of. He actually gambled on the £500,000 question though. Losing £218,000 in the process. Jim Titmuss was the first to lose £93,000 by failing to name the city in which Dick Turpin was hanged.

Thanks Will. I notice I got no reply from Wakey though.

Well done Claudine on becoming the second highest winner ever! If you post on here, you'd be the biggest winner ever to post on here (£100k Gaz already posts her and £120k Jennifer doesn't).

A great game with a large amount of money and a unique amount of money - £107,031 for a great lady!

Well done Claudine!

I don't want to say anything in case Ian W picks up on this, and naggs on about me.

But yeah, Millionare is totally different in an aspect of gambling. If you have knowlege of an answer, your chances are modified. On DOND, there is no way you can make your chances easier, unless the ajudicator tells you where everything is. Therefore if you don't know the answer, you're betting all of your money on a DOUBLE THE MONEY box value, which you have a 25% chance of winning or a NOTHING box value if you hit the 75% chance of getting the wrong answer.

But if you are on the £32,000 question, taking the money would be the most incredibly stupid decision ever. You have a 75% chance of winning £32,000 if you go on and nothing less, and a 25% chance of winning £64,000. If you take the money, you have a 100% chance of winning £32,000, and nothing more. Has anyone ever taken the money @ £32,000?

Wakey, Chris specifically mentions you have nothing to lose on £2,000 and £64,000.

You're right to point out Millionaire is different due to the skill aspect, it's just the only other show with comparable gambles (in the UK at least) and in the case of having a 50/50 and being entirely clueless on the question, it IS the equivalent of a DoND final two - which is why it was mentioned in this context.

Anyway. Amidst all this debate - what a game from Claudine. 107% brilliant as far as I'm concerned.

We seem to be getting a six-figure win once every six months, or thereabouts:

November 2005 - Jennifer (£120,000)
May 2006 - Gaz (£100,000)
December 2006 - Claudine (£107,031)

In fact, had DOND not had a summer break, today's episode would've been a November one! Expect the next one in May, then!

She also dealt at an unusual amount! Nice one, Claudine!

I reckon the next 6 figure winner is already part of the furniture! ;) ;-)

There's always room for speculation when shows are filmed so long in advance... we'll soon find out the reality!
