The Banker says he told us this would be tricky, and respects that Mathew sees his game as a journey, but this is a journey with stops, and Mathew is able to decide when it ends.

It doesn't matter whether or not the player has feelings, and if he/she does, whether or not it turns out that he/she should have gone with them - all you have to do to know whether or not he/she will deal is just look at the clock.
