Tens of millions of people with more of a grip on reality than you certainly do. And Endemol and Noel have worked this out after two years of - in honesty - essentially being seduced by a debt-led casino-capitalist bubble. Again, like tens of millions of people were. When cool-luke-18 shows more of an understanding of the show than you do, something's up.

It is wonderful to see DoND, a show that by its very nature links itself rather to the bubble era, show at least some sense of post-2007 reality. There are exceptions, of course; Emma's game is ample proof that the bubble-era language and script remains ready to be used at any moment. In general, though, the show has transformed itself, almost to the point of me trusting myself to watch the edited transmissions from time to time again, instead of relying on these text commentaries to report on the game and on two or three loose remarks per game that make me want to punch the screen.

Recessions don't effect people uniformly. If you've lost your job then the effect can be monumental. If you stay in employment, then life just carries on really. Go to work, pick up salary, pay mortgage etc.. Obviously some people who are heavily indebted or who feel their job is precarious will look over their shoulder a bit more but there are plenty of people who are serenely untroubled.

In DoND terms I think Luke's point was actually well made. If you select contestants who don't (desperately) need the money and take the view that the worst that will (likely!) happen is that they go home 1p richer then you'll see more big wins. You need balanced contestant selection but for long periods we only get people whose lives have been tarnished by tragedy or are fighting off the bailiffs.

None of which is to endorse wild gambling but a more reflective cross section of society would be nice, with a few more people whose circumstances allow them to roll the dice on what is after all a gameshow, and one that gives them the opportunity to win life changing fortunes.

Good shout.

The show at present suffers from a very awkward cognitive dissonance, as the show is caught up both in the baggage of that's-so-2006 attitudes to money and risk and in its more recent sob-story mawkishness. It needs to be 'just another game show' again, in a way.

I quite enjoyed this game. Heath's persona (as such) was interesting to watch and my idea on the "dream" amount changed a couple of times during the game. Didn't think it would be the biggie personally but I was wrong.

Nothing against the £27,000 deal, a decent offer for that board.
