I was gutted, again. Another game i ruined

Even though I don't believe in the whole "death box" superstition - I'm surprised Steve didn't leave 22 to the end today.

I have to be honest, I thought the same, but then again I suppose it depends on whether you believe the superstition. The superstition was definitely proved right in this game :smt009

In a situation between 22 and another number, I'd normally avoid 22 unless the other one was my lucky number (11).

Clare, I didn't notice you crying today, they didn't show you after you'd opened your box.

Personally, I'd rather have a dodgy start then come good towards the end, rather than start really strongly.

See also; yesterday's game. Except thankfully she got an all-blue fifth round or she'd have won a blue too.

Can I just take this opportunity to say (although I'm sure I will be shot down in flames..lol) that I think people care too much about peer pressure, or banker tactics.. You know.. I would just play the game with honestly and deal when it's right for you - i.e. When YOU think it's right for you to deal - and ignore what the banker says.

Personally, even if I was at 3rd deal offer and the banker says "You are going to deal this, I am sure of it.." , then just listen to the offer and rather than trying to 'outwit' or 'disprove' his words - just think "Wow.. you I know don't care what people think.. it's risky to go on.. £17k is lovely.. I'm outta here.." Then yeah.. people will think "Loser" , or "Targetist" , or, "the banker got to him, and won.."

So what? You have £17k in the bank. They don't. They ain't standing where you are. It ain't their game. It's yours to do with what you like.

That's just me.. And I wanna add that I am the first to No Deal. Even on a slightly dubious board. I wouldn't necessarily deal early every game.. However, I would think to myself.. "Hmm. My gut tells me this game is not gonna end well. I can just feel a large few reds being opened, and I don't wanna walk away with peanuts.."

Hey ho.

Russ, the points you made are very valid in my opinion, and i think as dan was trying to say earlier, sometimes it can seem that you should go on to make good tv - its not always the case as i think people should think about how much the offer means to them, not necessarily anything else. Its a funny old game though, and there are so many factors that can sway you...

I think you might of taken my comments the wrong way clare.

What I meant was that in the first 3/4 offers, the dealer is not very competitive and the offers are not intended to get you out of the chair. That's why nobody goes on them, because they're never any good. Further in the game, the offers have some value to them, they have to be to get the suspense that the show strives for.

I wasn't suggesting that anyone would go on just to make good TV, but that Steve was forced to go on (by the weakish offer) so Channel 4 could make good TV (big win or loss).

thats why it pays to come into good form when the serious offers are about, 8box and 5box.

Steve had one of those unlucky games where his board was decreasing at the time when the offers normally increase.

Not much of a game unfortunately, at least in the way of tension , at least the guy who turned down 40K had proper decisions to make. I guess endemol's lowballing the offers sometimes to get a big finish maybe - but I'd still rather see higher offers and a gamble going wrong than a flat game.

Good point, very true.

I totally agree that momentum in the second half of the show is critical, as the Banker tends to react disproportionately to momentum shifts (as he did today) and the early offers haven't been dealable for months (as they weren't today). I totally disagree that people do not occasionally play on 'just to make good TV'. Even one of the great statisticians admits to doing just that, although a decision like his is unlikely to be faced again for a very, very long time.

I'm with you Dan - Im rushing cos im in work, dont think i wrote it very well. lol. I know you would never suggest anyone should go on just to make good tv - lol. :-D

To be honest in Steve's game, i think that anyone would probably have made the same decision. It just wasnt to be. But, he is a great guy with a great family and the baby on the way is a great gift lasting longer than money!

(sorry dan if you thought i took it the wrong way)

Well I missed this one (I could have watched it on More 4 but thought I'd have a sneak preview!!) and when all the reaction was negative, decided not to bother (the read the review in full).

Games like this are the absolute bottom of the pile for me. A forced blue win with terrible offers, but still offers to be gutted about turning down and losing, even in retrospect they were poor for the board, and also with hope of the big win until it's snatched away at the very end (the 20th box is always the worst possible moment - poor Clare-Louise had a "Marilyn moment" and you must be as upset as the player when you do that even though it's beyond your control).

If someone wins a blue I prefer it to be through taking proper gambles like Tony, or through games that are an absolute disaster from the start like Derek Brown and Nikki Tucker among others......

I guess through having all red wins last week, the production team wanted to mix it up a bit and poor Steve was the unfortunate recipient of it. Still it sounds like he took it well which is good, I know I probably would be gutted in that scenario.......

Thanks for your sympathy James! I was gutted. In a way it felt like i had personally take the money away from him, but he is a lovely guy and as gutting as it was, he really did take it well. We were all so gutted for him as u can imagine!

"So maybe this is going to be a hopeful offer" Noel mused at 5-box to the Banker. "I was right" Noel confirmed as he put the phone down, followed by the statement from Noel that "in normal circumstances he would almost certainlly offer £250 at this point, but he is actually going to offer you £1,500" as if to suggest the Banker was actually being generous to Steve by offering £1,500 :?

It was looking hopeful that Steve might actually keep the £75,000 till the end, but the 'Death Box' lived up to its name today. Though even if the £75,000 had remained I doubt the offer would have been that generous (supposedly it would have been £19,000, but who knows if it really would have been in live play) and might have just forced Steve to the end anyway.

Your café has no variety whatsoever. What about apple sandwiches? I love them.

also, it is 1.785, not 1.782. I broke under the pressure and got it wrong. Luckily the banker didn't highlight that fact. lol.

I cannot believe that everybody has let this gross inaccuracy pass by unchallenged! Correct to three decimal places, the chance of taking out the top three remaining boxes between 8-box and 5-box is 1.786%, and not 1.785% as some people here are suggesting!

Dan, you are still truncating when you should be rounding!

(Mind you, at least you're being consistent. That Banker fellow criticised you for rounding incorrectly, and then did exactly the same thing himself when he quoted 1.78% as the "correct" figure. Of course, we should all know by now that the chance, rounded to two decimal places, is actually 1.79%. The stupid hypocrite.)
