I thought he was quite irritating on the wings, and I can't put my finger on why. I thought he was even more so in live play, and all that dithering between him and his mum near the end got on my nerves. "You're only here once!" he trilled, even though he had no intention of making the most of that once! And I don't say that cos i grudge him his win or his cautious approach, it just annoys me when paople make statements that have no bearing on them or their game.

Actually, 'you're only here once' is the only reason to Deal. If you get to play the game loads of times you might as well turn down everything below the mean and let the one or two massive wins cancel out the blue wins you'll nearly always get...

(Unless you get a run of games like this with blues on the table...)

With the game as a one-shot, you have to consider the fact that if it goes wrong you won't just be able to make it up next time (well, you could go to a casino but you'll get far worse pot odds) because there is no 'next time'...

That would be playing in my mind. Of course there's the train of thought of "you're only here once" so play the game but then there's also the added worry of not winning enough and never being able to go back. I'd rather deal early for a nice amount (and perhaps miss out on a little bit more) than go home with barely nothing (unless it's a trainwreck/there are no dealable offers).

That train of thought is a distortion encouraged by Noel.

Really the game's about optimising the result of your unique opportunity according to how you value money. If each penny is worth as much as the last that means turning down every below-mean offer. But that's not true - a quarter of a million is not five times as useful as fifty grand, and nor is fifty grand five times as useful as ten grand. How much more useful, that's another matter that people can only guess at. And therein lies the game.

Arran played it cautiously in the end, moreso than I would have done, but it worked moderately well for him. And I'm glad he didn't let his adoption of the distorted version of 'you're only here once' sway him at five-box (did it sway him at eight-box though?).

Oh definitely. There's no doubt he played it cautiously. And perhaps it did sway him at 8-box. Thankfully going on three more boxes didnt have too bad an impact, it could have gone far worse but of course, could have gone better.

So-so game. Arann was a nice enough lad, liked his goodie-box for the banker. But the game never really caught fire, mainly thanks to some very bad luck, and the parallels with Judy's game just a couple of days earlier didn't help it stand out.

Still all things considered this has been the best week of Series 4 so far, so overall it feels the show is on an upturn

:? I really don't see how anyone watching this game could think that his mum was encouraging him to No Deal at 10k!!
Why would she say DBG Rule - 'Don't be Greedy' - if she thought he was going to Deal? :ponder:
