Contenders for this year are:

Joe Calzaghe - Undisputed world super-middleweight boxing champion.

Lewis Hamilton - World championship runner-up in his rookie Formula One season.

Ricky Hatton - Fights Floyd Mayweather for WBC world title on eve of show.

Andy Murray - Broke into the world top 10 despite an injury that ruled him out of Wimbledon.

Christine Ohuruogu - Returned from one-year ban for missing three drugs tests to land world 400m title in Osaka.

Paula Radcliffe - Won the New York Marathon just 10 months after giving birth to a baby daughter.

Jason Robinson - Retired after playing key part in England making the Rugby World Cup final.

Justin Rose - Captured golf's European Order of Merit title.

James Toseland - Claimed the World Superbikes Championship for the second time.

Jonny Wilkinson - Shrugged off injury to help England to Rugby World Cup final.

It's got to be Hatton (but not if he doesnt win the morning before) or Hamilton

Will almost definitely be Lewis Hamilton.

But if Hatton does the amazing thing and beat Mayweather, then he deserves it!

Lewis has an amazing season but he deserves to get it when he wins the actual Championship, Hatton still wins it for me.

Hamilton for me.

OK, he missed being champion by 1 point. But going from unknown to second (and becoming world famous in the process) is a bigger leap than going from second to first.

I have to admit I thought Lewis Hamilton had that in the bag as well

Total shocker but hey at least the GBP finally get one vote right

Lewis only coming second was a shocker! Although not the first time this year...

How many main trophies are there? The one in Las Vegas seemed to have shields on it that represented previous winners. I didn't see a close up of the main trophy they had in Birmingham.

I can't argue with the result. Obviously the boxing fans voted hugely (all the boxing last night would have helped considerably).

The bookies must be very happy with first Hatton losing at then 1/7 favourite Lewis Hamilton losing tonight.

Right person won in my opinion. Calzaghe deserved some recognition for what he has achieved over the years.
Hamilton will surely become F1 World Champion in the near future then he will become Sports Personality.
Hatton would surely have won this if he had won last night but I think 3rd was fair seeing as he has had a great year.
